Fuel door adjustment

Hi Pelicans:

I bumped into my fuel door while it was open, kind of like overextending the range of hinge pivot. No perceivable dents to the fuel door.

While it still closes, it’s not sitting quite right. Also, the hinge side door edge *just* contacts the the door recess of the driver wing, holding it up from fully opening when I pull on the release cable.

Does anyone have tips on adjusting the door to make it sit right/open right again?

Thanks!

Sounds like the internal bulkhead is bent. I should be a pretty flat surface where the hinge attaches.

Hmm, will check. There’s two studs that attach the door to the bulkhead, any suggestions for flattening if need be?

On my ‘77 the fuel door has 3 M5 Allen bolts holding the hinge in place with access to the bolts is from under the fender, should seen the threads extending inside the fuel door compartment.
If yours is the same, remove the entire fuel door and tweak the hinge until it flattens and conforms to proper gap orientation.
If you can’t remove the fuel door, you would probably have to resort to using light hammer taps with a soft wood or nylon dowel to flatten the hinge. Worse case as previous stated is the bulkhead took all the force with also would need tapping back flat…but I think the hinge and the door are the weak link.

Looking at it, there may not be a way of taking off just the door by tapping out the hinge pin and spring to get at the bent hinge or fender and then trying to get the spring back on easily - without scratching up paint.
