dash light
I recently saw this dash light hanging under my ash tray. I have a 1985 911. It lights when I turn on my parking/head lights.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1665526026.jpg This picture is looking straight up with the ash tray removed. Does this bulb go in the hole in the center and light the opened ash tray? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1665526116.jpg Thanks. |
Yes.

Yep it's the ashtray light. Be sure to put a fuse on your light switch. Saves it from letting out the smoke if this or any other bulb/wiring has an issue in the HL circuit.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the grommet that holds in the ash tray light? Mine if a blank hole and the light wont stay in.
I was thinking of using a rubber grommet of sorts but was hoping to find the actual holder/insert from Porsche. Thanks for any help on this! |

The light is likely the fog light indicator. Check if fog lights were previously installed or if the light is malfunctioning. Consult your owner's manual or a Porsche specialist for clarification.

Anyone happen to have a picture of what the grommet or holder is supposed to look like or a possible part number? Thanks!

Hi x98boardwell- That is 91163290400...

I ]think what the OP 85911 was holding could be one of the hvac slider control instrument sockets that have a push-in 1.2w bulbs (900.631.132.90) and the that socket easily pops out because of old, stretched, vibration, etc. I have similar empty bulb holder. OP looks to have an empty opening, but I doubt it because the grommet is still there.
Yes - a little tape wrapped around will secure it. There are two bulb sockets that light up the slider… one for the Fan/Def Off/Down arrow and the other the fan symbol/Up arrow. The socket is part of the loom but is replaceable. Here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741894373.jpg What Missed Approach posted is the ashtray socket bulb, as a unit pops out but not sure if bulb is separate or replaceable with a 1.2w bulb. I have this unit (photo) and it lights up but hard to see the wiring. I know some wiring with black/blue stripe is the dash loom. Brown or brn/wht wire also part of interior light circuit. The ashtray bulb is not visible from underneath- I looked and can’t see it and photo didn’t show any. So if x98boardwell has no ashtray lamp, that’s the part (or bulb) needed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741893831.jpg But to expand on the original poster - Here’s photos of mine, I too have an extra mystery socket. My ashtray lights up and I know the bulb that’s hanging belongs in the slide controller right side. The empty mystery bulb socket (to the right of lit bulb) doesn’t appear to have ever been used has no bulb, maybe part of some optional instrument (?). Its wires are covered so the circuit is unknown for now. My Fog/R.Defroster knobs and Brake/Seatbelt lamps are operational which bulbs are internal anyway. I’ll be doing some radio work this weekend so access will be easier to get a better look at my ashtray light to see if that bulb is replaceable and maybe put a bulb in the empty mystery socket to see if it works… and at the least add more light to the dash or maybe the floor. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741893639.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741893745.jpg |
Thanks!
This is what I'm currently staring at. It seems as though all smaller ones that are pictured above have a home where this one does not.
With the original socket style "L" shaped light fixture, am I holding onto the correct one for the ash tray? Thank you for all the help! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741907701.jpg |
at @EC900, thanks for the help as well. The OP 85911 posted this in 2022, I'm reviving it for what I am needing help with since this was close to what I was asking.

X98boardwell - what you’re holding is what belongs in the right side of the slider controller (fan/up arrow symbol) slot, at least that’s how my ‘77 is set up, this one lamp socket keeps popping out.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741983085.jpg My new photo below isn’t that good. Note the four wires: two Brown - one Black - one Black/Blue stripe. The terminal (yours) is bent out to 90° whereas mine is flattened. There’s only so much slack in the loom so it’s limited as to where these sockets can go. So to be clear, your ashtray light in not working - but what about both sides of the heat control sliders? It might be difficult to see if slider bulbs are lit so a darkened garage is best. I do know these bayonet style 1.2w bulbs have tiny wires on the outsides and if they’re bent or askew going into socket, they won’t work until proper contact is made inside the socket. It’s tough, maybe impossible to get at these slider bulb sockets with radio in the way. But you can feel around to check the ashtray light socket is there and pop that out from underneath, which I’ll try to get at to give you anymore reference if needed. It wasn’t until it put my glove box liner and radio back in did I find that that heat slider bulb socket popped out which I’ll be sure to wrap some tape around it to snug it up this weekend when my radio gets replaced! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741982272.jpg |
Ok, Update for x98boardwell….
Got a jump on the weekend radio project - it hit 75° in Chicago. I managed to remove my radio, digging around and found how easy it is for the aftermarket spaghetti wiring if as sloppy as mine, can interfere with the bulb sockets to the climate control sliders. One wrong move arranging the bulb wiring like zip tying and they’ll pop out easily. One of my photos show how the slider panel bulb openings are spread apart, they will need to be wrapped with tape or tiny zip tie because wrapping only the socket won’t hold it. Plus the added tape makes it difficult to reinsert these - even with the radio/frame out. Also, that mystery bulb socket I found was also for the slider. There are 4 sockets, two one each side to illuminate the slider controls. ANYWAY …… You are correct x98boardwell - I was wrong, the bulb socket you are holding IS for the ashtray. I pulled mine out and the bulb is replaceable …a common Hella 2w miniature #3898, same for some of the gauges, they’re available at the local auto parts store. Now, if your rubber 90° L-boot or bulb socket holder (grommet) is still intact in the dash frame, simply slide it in. No need to remove radio, it’s tight but doable. If the rubber boot was knocked out/off, (maybe sitting somewhere on top) a little soap will finagle the round part back into the small frame hole so the lip is secured to frame. If it’s lost and gone - then order the part @MissedApproach recommended. To insert that bulb socket into the rubber boot, it helps to use a wee bit of dish soap on the socket part. Your rubber boot opening should be facing Left to insert the bulb/socket. Also - If the bulb is burned out (it lights up w/o key in ignition) simply press the 2w bulb in and twist counterclockwise and pull it out. Reverse to install and bulb will lock it. Hope this helps you and others searching in the future. ASH TRAY LIGHT RUBBER BULB SOCKET HOLDER AND WIRING… http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741997757.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741998968.jpg BULB # 3898 2w…buy spares in case you need one for the dash gauges. BTW - I’m also swapping out all the old dash gauge filament bulbs for a set of CARMAGIC Vintage White LED’s and brighter green Turn signal indicator LED’s and the most importantly the CARMAGIC in-line Dash Light Fuse kit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741999110.jpg |
Thank you very much, that is exactly what I needed!!! Truly appreciate that! 1/2 my family is from Chicago and I used to live in the city... love that place! Enjoy the weather!
