We 911 airhead fans

Do you think our group of people is going to be smaller and smaller, bigger or the same? It does take some type of personality to own an airhead 911. If you were between age of 18-25 when a 911 was in it's prime time, it should be your dream car to own.

The group will likely shrink slowly over the years as fewer and fewer air cooled 911's are around, but it will probably be quite some time before it is noticibly smaller.... I hope.

I don't know - pwd72s is talking about crushing his car. Not only do we have to worry about rust and wrecks, we have to concern ourselves with the anti-yuppie airhead destroyers. Perhaps the cars should be designated mobile historic sites, or something!

The car's lifespan was a good 33 years, and on top of that there were many different configuraitons of the car so I highly doubt the group will get noticeably smaller any time soon.

I seem to recall reading there were something like 250,000 air cooled 911's (all versions totaled) made. Given the good care many of the cars are given they will persist for a while. Jim

i think it's going to grow...........turnouts have been growing at alot of porsche events (pca/scca/etc) so i think with more people becoming enthusiasts there will always be the diy circle.....and EVERYBODY is online nowadays, and with books like waynes it can open eyes as to the actual owning/maintaining of an aircooled 911

There is something about the simplistic goals of aircooled vehicles that draws people in. Weither it's a VW bus, or a Porsche 911, the vehicles were built in the classic german manner, which after working on them for awhile you really get to appreciate.

They were built w/ a specific goal (bus=utility, porsche=fast around corners). Some people "get it" others don't. "If I had to explain it to you, you really wouldn't understand" is a common quote among many aircooled enthusists who endure the jabs from others about driving a vehicle w/ the engine in the back that doesn't use water for coolant like "normal" cars.

It's an aircooled thing. As long as there are aircooled vehicles still out there, there will be aircooled enthusists to take care of them.

I couldn't care less about the "Aircooled Thing". I decided I wanted one when I was about 5 - thought they looked cool, went real fast and sounded butch. Had no idea cars even needed to be cooled at the time.

So if the great man had made them water cooled from day one, could an "Airhead" please clarify if you would now be driving a Tatra or Corvair instead?

I believe the community is Growing. I'm 34, got my first P-Car about 2 months ago. In the past I've had a Mustang, a Falcon, a Nova. Then a Volvo, a Jeep and a Bronko. Later another Volvo, a 4Runner and a Mercedes. I would always get a boner over the classic muscle cars. Then, about 6 months ago, I started noticing the 911's - a Porsche was something I would never even look at, much less appreciate, but nevertheless I took notice. At the time I needed a second car but didn't want another set of car payments plus didn't really like anything new out there in the 20-30K range. I did a little research, asked around, hunted down a 911 and bought it. For the first couple of weeks I thought I make a terrible misstake - my kidneys hurt, the wheel was hitting my knees, my head was brushing the roof. Then, I started to figure out how to drive it and now I admit I really love the car. I keep being amazed by how this car is nothing like anything I've ever owned.

The point of this long, drawn out story is that I can't be the only one so yes, I think the appeal of these cars is growing.

I dont think the community is in danger of shrinking. The number of cars out there will drop, but there will always be people that would much prefer a 73 S, 78 SC, or 89 3.2 to a newer "sporty" Honda or any other vehicle without an ounce of soul. Some love the cars for mechanical reasons - simplicity of design, etc, etc, and others (like me) for the "feel" that no other car can seem to match.

Im one of the younger members on the boards (24), and I had no difficulty recognizing what the 911 stood for when I was in my early teens. I think I decided I needed to own one when I was about 7 years old after watching a Disney movie, of all things, where all the "bad guys" drove black/black 930's.

Fear not old timers - the next generation of airheads is just as large and fanatical as ever - most of us are just waiting for you to sell your cars to us!

The name of the movie was "Condor Man." I credit it with instilling the "bug" at a very young age. Probably filmed around... 1985 Im guessing?

I agree with those that feel the interest in the 911 may be growing.
There is just something about the sound of the air cooled flat six that is intriguing, Sort of like the sound of a Harley Davidson, they just have that raw sound
The body style is also very appealing to most people. So when these things come together in vehicle it's just MAGIC.

And where else can you buy a little race car that you can drive daily for the money these can be had for ?

Have fun in your race cars this weekend
Cheers
