G50 question

89 Carrera with 5 speed G50

On the passenger side, with the wheel raised I can rotate the wheel back and forth about an inch before the the gears in the trans engage (do anything) (is this called lash?). I think the trans is getting loud and I am babying it. I just installed a non rubber disk clutch, could be the issue?

I also just replaced both half shafts / joints (the play is not coming from the CV's).

Is this anything to be concerned about? If yes, what's the fix

Thanks,

Chris
89 Carrera

Pretty normal, and G50s are kind of noisy anyway.

Pretty sure mine's the same way. 190k on it. Been that way since I bought it 10 yrs ago. Never an issue or gotten worse.

Probably nothing to worry about. If there’s a gearbox issue it will generally whine or howl. They don’t generally wear out quietly. It’s common to get a little anxious after doing the clutch, because now you can hear and feel it’s normal sounds more.

differential gears. normal.

The noise is likely something else. Is the noise more prevalent in any particular gear? Or goes away in a certain gear? Or on accel or decel?

It gets loud mostly in 5th gear under load. A grinding sound. have been living with it. but now that its getting cold and the windows up I hear it all the time. Changed gear oil twice, replaced CV's and trans / motor mounts.

Grinding sound is bad. I’m guessing it’s CV or other item outside the gearbox given the recent work. Changing the clutch wouldn’t cause a grind inside the box.

Chris - haven't done my clutch yet, but did replace engine mounts with WEVO, and new tranny mount inserts. Also did the shifter bushings. Having read many threads, you may just be getting more noise from the clutch - mine transmits more noise, but nothing that others are not referencing as "normal." As JW offered, the G50 can be noisy, and after any repair we are naturally listening more intently.

As Matt offered, a couple new sounds led me to find a stripped bracket - that removed a rattly on bumps. And the latest was ID'd as the driver side outer CV boot split...so that will be replaced when the parts show up.

Also, cannot remember where I read if you have LSD, there can be some additional noise when you are backing up...but cannot reference.
