Oil question

Hi all I have a 73t with a 2.4 and have always been running VR1- 20W50 as that seems to be one of the well liked oils on this forum.
My question is because I live in Ontario Canada and I’m a weekend driver and our temperatures will vary from 40ish to 90ish on my driving days is the 20W50 to heavy of an oil for my climate. I see Valvoline also has a VR1 10W40.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Mike

You could run 10W40 if you want to, but 20W50 is perfectly fine for those temperautes. I drive my car in roughly the same temperature range and have always used 20W50.

Do you ever get high temperature on your oil temp gauge? If so, the 10w-40 may run a little cooler because you can get more oil flow through the bearings and other parts, and thinner oil will cool a little better in the oil cooler. But this is pretty minimal, and may not make a noticeable difference in your engine and driving conditions.

I run VR1 20W50 in my SC in the north-east USA (NYC and surrounds), which means spicy 90-100 deg summers with traffic and plenty of 30-40 degree days in early winter before they salt everything.

Certainly no overheating issues, even when crawling back into the city on a Sunday afternoon post-drive.

Mike, I wrote here some things about using oils as I do in Germany. At the end I posted an oil recommendation taken from a SCs user manual. See the temperatures there to compare against your operation profile:

Thanks everyone for the replies, I’m in Florida for the winter ,not with my 911 but I always buy a case of oil to take back with me in the spring so just wanted to post this question before buying.
Pete my temperature gauge may rise a little with some spirited driving but not very much so thanks for that.
Thanks Thomas for the little write up this stuff just eases my mind as I am always wondering if I am using to heavy of an oil for my climate as it runs very well and I don’t want to force an engine rebuild for the wrong reason.
Thanks everyone very much.

Porsche recommends the own 20W50 oil as well for all early 911's up to the 2,7 engines.

https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/producthighlights/motoroil/

On my highmiler 3,0 SC I also use the 20W50 with succes: sounds better, almost no oil consumption. I would use it on all 911 F&G body cars, especially with high mileage. Of course it depends on ambient temperature and operating conditions. When using the car during winter times on a regular or daily basis a 10W40 would be a better choice then.

Thanks Thomas, I don’t take it out of the garage during the winter so my 20W50
Should be good. I’m a snow bird and head south first of November and back home in April.
