Question Fan Chipped - Usable?

We have an original fan. Two of the blades have chips out of them. Is it trash?

Scrap Metal or this may happen https://www.flickr.com/photos/2010-2011_european_tour/albums/72157644084433382

I was at idle, just engaged when i heard a nasty clunk. Best News, I wasn't at speed when it broke. I've heard of Fans at speed Destroying the back end/ engine

Replace It, hang on garage wall.

I dont see how a chipped fan blade results in a sheered alternator shaft but do what you will.

An out of balance fan can cause damage from vibration. If solid except for the chip it can be fixed and re-balanced.
The problem is if it has deeper corrosion. I can't really tell from the photos, it needs to be examined a bit closer. As you can see in this picture, sometimes magnesium corrodes too much to be fixed.

Welding a chip, done by a competent expert, and the fan in the last picture above, are very different things that should not be compared.

This chip has been missing for over 20 years. I’ll let you know if the fan explodes and destroys my engine.

I have a similar size chip in one of my blades also. Also has never been an issue in 20+ years and can't sense any imbalance thru the rev range.

Just chip the opposite blade and you’re now balanced; all good!!

Clean it up & have it crack checked. I don't think that chip will put it noticeably out of balance. Run it.
