Can jiggle steering wheel
This is not from side to side, but just in general..you can jiggle it up and down..as though the rod is loose. I remember this from my 914 and never figured out what it was. The wheel itself is not loose..nut is tight..seems like a bushing or something might be missing...what is this?
I guess it's just not my week...

there is a plastic bushing in the column that goes bad, very common. There is a brass part from a 928 that replaces the old plastic part. Pelican has the brass part.

And before you ask, when you install the brass bushing, you don't have to try and remove the remaining plastic bushing if it is still there. Just push in the brass bushing and it will push the plastic bushing down in the column where it will take a well earned rest and do no harm.

I have heard of someone having a piece of thier bushing wedge thier column in mid corner. Can't say for sure what was going on, I guess it's one of those one-in-a-million things, but with my luck I'll remove as much of the old bushing as possible if I ever need to replace the thing (if it hasn't already been done).
