cv axle boot replacement
I'm rebuilding the axles on a 1970 911S using pelican parts cv axle rebuild kit.
The problem i'm having is getting the boot to seat over the flange of the housing. Unfortunately, with this kit the boot and flange aren't integrated together. The metal flange from the CV housing is reused and the boot replaced. I've tried a heat gun to get it to stretch a bit more but no go. It shouldn't be this difficult to get this boot installed. Pretty frustrating. Any tips on getting the boots seated? Thanks |
I think you need to remove the c-clip and slide the flange off

We need more information. Pics would help.
Easiest way I have found is to have the whole axle assembly put together with the CV boot free to slide bach and forth. Push the small end of the boot out over the hump on the axle, towards the CV joint and secure it in place. I use a really heavy panduit (zip tie) in lieu of the metal strap clamp. I've found they actually last much longer and never cut the rubber on the boot. Anyway, this will compress the CV boot a good deal, which is what you want. Make sure the flange and the inside of the boot are greased up with CV grease, and just work the boot over the flange. It should pop in place fairly easily. You are using the compression you created by fixing the axle end to help you do this. Too many guys think they have to keep all of this "clean" and do it dry. There's no point in that. Grease will seep in there anyway. Might as well get it in there now and take advantage of it and let it help you seat the boot. |
I believe there are boots that are incorrect from certain suppliers. I had the same issue and found the correct boot that actually fit the flange without major stretching. I'm not near my shop for a couple of days or I would get you more info today.

The only times it does not fit for me has been a non correct boot. Make sure you have the right one.

Yeah...looks like the boot is just the wrong size. The kit is the right one for my car but i guess like you guys are saying the supplier sends the incorrect ones at times. Pelican parts recommends i order the porsche branded one but cant confirm the dimensions. I guess i'll just have to take a chance on them.

Been there lately with my '88. You do need to pry some with one or two flat blade screwdrivers and apply some force. Don't hesitate to stretch the boot, it is quite solid when new.
What is the metal flange OD? What is the boot ID? They should be a tight match. |
