Looks like the back half of a 908-3, maybe 1971 Targa or Nurburgring. Doesn't look blue so might be the martini car?
Hows that??? ![]() MAybe a 917PA spyder in the interserie or Can Am., although the car on track looks suspicously like a blue 917K so not sure where. Still thinking

Mark Donohue trashed a 917 at Road Atlanta back in the 70's. That picture looks like it could be on the back straight which is where he caught some air under the front of the car and went
airborne, did a complete back flip, broke the car into a million pieces and survived! Fred Cook '80 911SC coupe |

I also think it's the Donanhue crash ..where you see him later on crutches and arch rival Gerorge Follmer ( from the Trans Am series) gets his ride for the rest of the season !

Nope, It wasn't MD's crash. Thankfully for the driver I'd say it's lucky that it WASN'T a 908/3 since that car had the driver quite a bit further forward then this car did. In this case the driver walked away -- abeit without his shoes and socks...
By the way, if you look closely you notice that the engine is nowhere to be seen in the picture either. All 8 cylinders of it ![]()

OK; The field's open to anyone who might know. The car was a 908 Spyder. The people guessing MD's crash in his 917-10 made me think of something that I'd never noticed before. If you look at the remains of the chassis from both crashes, the remains were pretty similar -- basically a seat attached to a bulkhead and not much else. Since the 917 frame was a derivative of the earlier 908 frame, I guess it would make sense. I guess that it's good that they don't build them like that anymore!
Here's a picture of the car earlier in the day. ![]() The event was definitely in Europe. This particular event (the crash) was a footnote to a much larger event in the Porsche universe, actually 2 events...

John,
It looks like Dieter Spoerry's 908 before he hit Jack Brabham in practice at Le Mans, 1970. But, what was the second "larger event in the Porsche universe"? Was that car somehow connected to Solar or the making of the movie? Tim |

Tim - I knew that you'd get it!
![]() The 2 big things in Porsche's universe that year? Their first Le Mans win (overall) and the filming of "Le Mans". No, Dieter's car was not involved in either. I finally got my copy of the book "The Speed Merchants - A journey through the world of Racing (The 1998 version)" from Amazon last week (2 months late!) and I saw these pictures and I still keep shaking my head. I can't believe that Dieter walked away, and I don't think that he quite believed it at that time either! The later version of "The Speed Merchants" book is a great compliment to the original mid-70's version. Where the original has great pictures, the text is somewhat dated, as breathless and sometimes overly dramatic as the voice-over in the film. The newer book has a great narritive by Keyser of his observations and experiences while racing and gathering material for the first book, and does a great job of capturing the feel of the racing environment in those days. If anyone gets an Amazon gift certificate for Father's day, I'd recommend the book. It was worth the wait. ![]()
