79 3.0 CIS cams

I installed a 79 3.0 911SC CIS engine in my 914 recently. I had purchased the engine on Ebay last fall from a guy in S.Cal. who I've been unable to reach since was injured in a car accident.

I was told by the seller that the engine had been rebuilt with 40,000 on the rebuild, on the work up sheet he told me the cams had been replaced during the rebuild.

The engine runs great and is very strong, no oil leaks anywhere.

Now we get to my question, I have been told that the 3.0's run out of breath after 5000 rpms, I have no experience with this engine but the power band is very high, it has very little low end power, and comes to life after 4000 and wants to rev and pull way past red line. Would this be because it is running the 964 cam profile.

The engine runs very smooth, idles great and I am very happy the way it propels the 914 down the road. This is not a torqy engine out of the hole.

What do you guys think I have.

David

I believe the '79SC engine is a totally awsome beast. The fact that it's soooo fast and soooo strong means it's probably stock.

I believe the 964 cams, in addition to providing power past 5500 (SC cams generally make power to about 5500), also provide more power down below, at least down to 3000. So, I'd guess it has stock cams in it. My stock cams were poor below 3500 or 4000, and poor above 5500, but between 4000 and 5500, they SCREAMED. Above 5500 they still made good power, just a bit less than at 5000.

Never noticed a problem even over 6K, wonder if it's because of the extra plumbing backpressure on US models... BA's book even recommended using SC cams for turbos. (at least he used to)

My stock 1980 3 liter SC engine (with different muffler/no cat) comes on the power at around 3900 and pulls hard all the way to 6000 (and above if I'm pushing it). I'm not sure who told you that they run out of breath at 5000, but they are wrong IMO.
