Brake Pad difference?

Looking to put brake pads on a 964 due to age of the pads.

Any suggestions? I noticed the pricing is all over the place for pads. Bosch/Textar seem reasonably priced. Porsche pads are more than 2x? Anyone have a go to brand?

No track time, just normal driving.

Thanks!!

I've had several sets of Textar's on my 3.2... work fine for typical street duties, just really dusty. Past weekend I put Porterfield R4-S's on. About the same price as the Textar's and a little better bite when warm and a lot less dust so far. Very happy.

Assume would have similar results on a 964 although pricing may be different than the 3.2 variants.

+1 on the Porterfield R4-S - have them on a G-body with 964 calipers with no booster. Feel is good and they are much cleaner than the Pagid pads I had on the car.

I would either go for the Porterfields mentioned above, or Hawk Yellows. Both offer better grip than stock/Textars, aren't expensive, quiet, low dust, and don't chew up rotors. The only problem is that for early 964s (with the two-piston rear calipers), there is no matching product for the rear brakes. So you may still have to go for Textars there. But the rear brakes don't handle nearly as much stopping power as the fronts.

Thanks for suggestions....I did notice the availability for the rear pads on the early 964. I am replacing on a 1990 coupe.

Replace based on pad thickness remaining, not age.

+11111+ on the Porterfield R4-S's
You can ask Porterfield to redo your original rear pad metal
Family owned , just the best

I use Kaboom kitchen and bath spray cleaner to clean the wheels , super easy

and the pad performance is just the best for the street

Porterfield.

Replaced Textars with Porterfield and am very happy with grip and much cleaner Fuchs.

I bought direct from Porterfield, a real, live and helpful person.
Around $100. IIRC

I went on direct website...fronts $110 AP345 and rears AP483 $150.

Seems like the rears are available.

I’m in the process of replacing the pads on my Spyder and was looking for a lower dust option as the stock pads are absurdly dusty. Improved performance with lower dust seems like a win win to me, I’m going to give the Porterfield RS4-S a shot. I’ll report back after my first canyon run

I need to replace the front pads on my 88 which currently have Textars. I have been happy with the performance. A little dusty on my white Fuchs but keep them clean. I see the postive comments about the Porterfields. What about the Mintex and ATE offered on Pelican? I don't track the car. I do want top consider rotor wear.

Bought my car in 2007 and driven 60k miles+ to date. Circa 2019 thought it was about time to change pads so replaced the rear where the pads still had 'some' life left. Bought the fronts at the same time, but cheaped out and did not change at the time. Still waiting for the fronts to come to the end of life but nothing happening on the fronts. The new Mintex just sits on the shelf waiting. That's how it is on my street use...I don't really care what they are as long as they are front major brands.

Track use would be completely different. I have pads that I like and dislike.

Remember, almost any Pad worth a hoot needs to have some time to bed the pads .

R4S are all in @ 100 miles with a very soft bedding procedure , More aggressive and all in 15 miles
Cool them off for 12 hours .
You can ask Porterfeild for their take on bedding in as well

No doubt Porterfield are a great pad.

But here's another option-

I was very disappointed with the Textars stopping performance and asked a friend (factory trained Porsche mechanic) for his recommendation and he told me to try the Ate pads. Much, much better than the Textars and significantly less dust.

I thought the low cost Textars felt good but created a mountain of dust. Porterfield R4-S are on my Cayman now and even with some AX and a couple of track days they are wearing very well. I like them better than Hawk or Pagid orange as well.

Not a peep of squeal from them while my Raybestos full track pads used to squeal like a school bus when cold.

I have been using Mintex on my 911 for years with no issues for Street, AX, and HPDE. Quiet, low dust, rotor friendly. I like them.

I have Texars on my Mercedes C300. Work fine but really dusty. Will try ATE or MB next time.
