Spring plate removal problems
 

I am having a problem that I hope someone out there can help with.....I am working on a disaster of a 1976 912e and hope to bring it back to life but it's going to be a huge issue clearly.

Now for my current problem... I am trying to remove the torsion bars from the rear of the car and have easily gotten off the spring plate retainer and removed the lower trailing arm but cannot get the spring plate off of either side to save my life.

Is there a trick? or is there something that you can help me out with to get them off. I'm a half a can of liquid wrench into it and have gotten it to mive only an eighth of an inch.

This comes up every once in awhile. If you do a search you'll find some interesting methods to separate these things.

Me - I did this years ago before there was such a thing as a "web browser" and so not knowing any better I cut torsion bars in half with a hack saw. Not a great solution unless you have alot of spare time on your hands. I was installing new bars.

I recently removed the spring plates and tortion bars from my car. The spring plate seperated from the tortion bar on the drivers side with no problem. The tortion bar was stuck pretty hard inside the tube on the drivers side. The passengers side was just the opposite, the tortion bar seperated from the tube but was stuck tight in the spring plate. I devised a clamp out of a 4"lenghth of 2X4 with a hole drilled through it and cut in half. Clamped the two pieces around the tortion bar and used a crow bar to seperated the spring plate from the tortion bar. I used a long pry bar to knock out the other tortion bar on the drivers side by going through the tube from the pasengers side. Hope this helps
