Partially stranded, bad starter in LA
I was driving down to Los Angeles last night from San Francisco, After stopping to get gas, my car didnt start. After trying to jump then finally having someone hit my starter, I was able to get it going. Now I am still starterless in Lake Forest (close to LA) and I was going to try and take the car to Callas or TRE on monday. Does anyone have any better options? I wish that I could do it myself, but dont really have anything w/ me and I have only had the car for 1 month and I am not familiar w/ it. If I do go to one of the shops, does anyone know how busy they usually are? I kind of need it fixed soon. Thanks!

if you can get your hands on a starter (some people have said there is a NAPA starter that works with 911) you can probably have a small gas station change it out pretty quickly...(and very cheaply)...just familiarize yourself with the procedure so you can keep an eye on the wrench
search the archives and you can find which starter to get... if you want to use a shop use TRE...Dave happened to have a starter when mine died...maybe he has another one lying around...never used hergesheimer, but have heard good things... MJ |

Andial is just up the freeway off Harbor Blvd. in Santa Ana. They usually stay very busy, so I'd call in the morning before showing up. One of the best shops in the country, but it shouldn't take a genious to install a starter. Might take a agenious to make sure that it IS the starter, though. I wouldn't take it to a gas station.

yeah I would be cautious about a gas station, but then again it is just switching out a starter...(if in fact you are sure it is the starter)
you can pay andial 100 to swap out a starter...or throw the gas station guy 20.00 to take off 2 bolts and swap starters... up to you MJ |

Andial's shop rate is pretty much the same as others. I had a couple of engines dropped there and the bill was like $200. Got me where I needed to be in a hurry. I'd have been under the car for hours. One thing about the $20 gas station guy, is he gonna know how to put the car on his lift? Ask me how I know this can be a big problem and I''ll introduce you to my body guy who has pulled out the damage on a few cars.

ok ok I concede...I guess I am speaking from my fund of knowledge and what I'd be comfortable doing...because it irkes me the most when my car has a problem and I know I could do it myself for 1/10 of what I have to pay a shop just cuz I am away from my tools...
plus I've done it before and have guided garages on how to put my car on lifts before... good luck MJ |

If you don't have a tiptronic, there always the old stand by of push starting the car, don't use another car, just get a couple of friends or some strangers who are good samaritans to push the car. Once the car is moving turn the ignition key to the run position and let out the clutch.

and remember when you bump start, use 2nd or 3rd, not 1st. At least that was the MO for my bugs. My '63, with the robust 6v system, had to be push started almost every morning...

I had a starting problem once, soon after getting my '88 Carrera. I had dash lights, but no click or crank. It turned out to be the battery ground cable. Not the terminal connection, but the cable itself was corroded. It looked like a piece of green rope. After cleaning it thoroughly it worked fine, no problems since.

Thank you all for your help, I am going to try and have it fixed here in Lake Forest at hergesheimer. So I guess Ill just bump start it till then. Thank you all again! Hopefully my trip back will be less eventful and more fun!
