G50 Release Bearing…is this crack supposed to be here?
We’re putting my g50 back together and having trouble mating the transmission to engine. During the process I caught that the realest bearing has a crack that kind of looks intentional. Is this supposed to be there?
Also any tips on getting the trans mated back to the engine are appreciated. We’re 1/2” away and it keep getting hung up, possibly the input shaft. ![]()

1.yup no worries....2.did you use the installation guiding pin to align the clutch disc,if yes select the gear and spin the trans..
Ivan btw..looks very dry, make sure you lube fork fingers and the inside of the TO bearing plus the 2 meeting points for the fork look https://www.design911shop.com/p/porsche-911-964-993-996-997-clutch-release-bearing-sachs-3151000464/?currency=GBP&country=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2qKmBhCfARIsAFy8buI8ZOCI9ccAq4klC-3_Z1JYFFhvamjdOYRKjB-eLEv4pxiuR-Y0cioaAqGREALw_wcB#fancybox-619570

We did use the alignment tool and it does slide in. We’ll try the above remedies next. It’s so close…

No lube in the bearing liner or on the guide tube.

Nooooo! Lube the fingers, but DO NOT lube the inside of the T.O when it is a teflon lined bearing. Dry inside the bearing, dry guide tube, lube only the fingers and the splines on the friction disc and input shaft. That's the little lube pack that is supplied with the clutch. You only lube the guide tube and t.o. inner on all metal t.o. bearings, such as 915,901, 356 style.

So, oil lite bushings require a different type of lube. They should be pressure lubed prior to installation. We like gear oil. See this video:

I used a motorcycle jack w a rolling base to make it easier to guide on by myself.
Lining up the four bolts could be a bit tricky if you have to lift it up to put it on. ![]() I did have to take mine out because my sachs bearing separated at the pin... so putting the Porsche bearing I forgot I bought in later this week. Link to bike lift: AMAZON |

Finally got it mated. We took apart the clutch assembly, test fit it and reinstalled with extra attention to keeping the clutch alignment tool perfectly centered. That, plus a little bit of prying against the release fork got it flush.
Thanks for the help everyone!

Nice!
I went out to try to get my new release/throwout bearing on.. and need to take it to a shop to get press fit... I guess I don't weigh enough to stand on it and insert the retaining hoop. I'll try to take it to a local shop tomorrow. GL w the install! |

You can probably do this solo. Once it was assembled we were able to get it pressed in with a little bit of force (less than body weight).

Put it on the ground and kneel on each side. Not that hard.

I kneeled and stood on it. I got it to clip under the retainer, but the rest of the ring still sat a bit proud on other edges. I took it back apart, how does the below look?

Tap it in with a hammer and small punch or screwdriver to be sure it's seated. Oh, you have the big ring upside down. That tab goes between one of the pressure plate fingers. No groove for the snap ring on that side.

Wow, John thank you.
Flipped it this morning and barely had to kneel on it and the ring fully seated. May be able to get my first test drive in this week now! Thanks again. -Ian |
