Rear sway bar

I am looking to find a stock rear sway bar for my 1970 911T. I'm not looking to race the car but just want to put the stock bar back on (other is lost...long story).

What year 911 sway bars would work? I've posted a WTB message in the classified area but no one seems able to come up with an old sway bar....surely with all the upgrading going on out there someone would have one : )

Thanks!
Dan

It actually should be fairly easy to find a stock rear bar from a 69-8x car. A lot of the racer & R-Gruppe guys go to bigger bars. Just keep your eyes peeled here, and on Rennlist classifieds as well as ebay.

If all else fails, you can use the 19mm Weltmeister bar for not a ton of money although then you'd likely want a 19mm bar up front to keep the same balance. The ride would degrade somewhat, however, compared to the smaller (15-16mm) bars.

Dan,

Any '69 thru '76 bar would work ... the '77 models got the links with bolts at both ends.

INstallation

I am installing rears this WE. My E did not have factory bars, installed stock fronts this past WE, how do the rears attach? I have home made adapter brackets to go over the torsion tubes, but how do the twisted links attach?

Thanks

Chris,

Most aftermarket bars use a bolted link arrangement ... rather than the factory ball-stud pin [#11 in the diagram above] that had to be welded in place in the factory retrofit kit.

You can still use the larger, later bars on an early car with some fairly straightforward modification. See this article by my mechanic. I run a 21mm Carrera bar on my '73 like this.

So if I don't have the pins from the factory, is there an adapter set that attached the open end of the bars to the car? Are these u-bolt type attachments or do I drill and tap?

If you want to try using a later bar, I have a stock SC rear bar I don't need. From that article, it looks fairly simple if you can get the bushings made.

I've got rear bars and all the parts, plus the #11 brackets from above, I am just trying to figure out how to mount them if I don't have a the factory pins welded in....

Chris/Dan,
If you have pre-'77 mounting hardware as pictured and there isn't a ball pin already in the control arm, you must drill a hole in the control arm to accept the ball-pin (#11), then weld in place.

Here are some other options in order of increasing complexity:
- Install a WM sway bar. The drop links attach to the spring plate, not the control arm. However, smallest bar is 19mm. Entirely bolt-on.

- Use the late model sway bars w/modified hardware as described and linked by Tom (TT). However, you'll need to perform the aforementioned drilling/welding modifications to mount to the control arm.

- Upgrade to '74-'77 control arms. These use a ball pin mount for the sway bar. A side benefit is that al arms ('74-'89) are lighter (~13 lbs. ea.) and unsprung weight (~7 lbs. ea.). However, the lower shock mounts are different from '70 shocks which requires a slight mod. and matching year shocks as well...... or

- Upgrade to '77-'89 control arms. These use a threaded drop link hole, then use the late model, threaded drop link hardware or other aftermarket sway bars that use this bolt-on attachment point. Same shock mount issues.

Hope this helps,
Sherwood Lee

Yikes - there goes the plan for a quick install this WE. Dang, was looking forward to some street luge to evaluate the difference. Might it be easier to find some rear control arms with the mounting pins? My factory fronts took me days to painstakingly restore, stripped and coated with Wurth, all new fasteners, looks nice. But if the aftermarket weltmeisters are 19mm and up, the 15mm fronts will be out of whack.
