Rear arch question
 

Looking for confirmation of the type of rear arch on this 1974 G series UK spec car.
It's had a bit of work done over the years including a bare metal respray and a 3.0l engine transplant.
I can't see any sign of arch extensions being added..
The front arches seem out of sync with the rears though.
Any thoughts welcomed.

Trevor, since no one else has replied, I'll take a stab at it. Those look like SC rear fenders. If you can't see any metal work, either it was really good, or someone replaced the whole fender (up to the quarter window and rain gutter). That would be my guess. The front fenders look OE.

Make sure the car is a 74 and not an sc with a 74 vin. Those are SC flares and the fronts same fenders used 74-89.

it's had a lot of other visual updating work done (front valence, doors or at least mirrors, vent windows, etc.) to make it look like a 3.2 Carrera, so it wouldn't surprise me if the whole rear fenders were replaced.

I guess given the other work done by the previous owner,this all makes sense.
So not sure if it's worth doing any more work on the arches as I am quite happy with the look.
A case of 'more is less' in this case.

Would 930 front fender extensions balance the rears a little better?

no, they'd be too wide.

that is how the SC's and carrera's came from the factory. what do you feel is out of balance?...

I would check the VIN number maybe its a 74 Carrera ? If it is the the rear flares would be correct. And late 74 they went from duck to tail for the spoiler.....

Well I thought I had been quite thorough, so here's what I've got:

Vin: 911 4110037*
Engine:6393274

My research indicates the following:
Model: 911, Year of manufacture: 1974, TE, Coupe, Serial number 037*
Engine: 1979 3.0 litre Kjetronic (not original obviously)
Spec:1979 911SC 180@5500 265@4200 8.5:1 1160 3319 930/03 915/62 9119300001-9119303318 6390001 +

74 911 (note not a 911S) In 74 they had 3 models that year: a 911 (similar to the T models of the previous era), 911S (like the E models previously) and the new Carrera.

So you have a highly modified 74 that was made to look like a 84-89 Carrera as noted above. Aside from the front lower valance, previous owner might have been going for a Carrera 3.0 look. The engine is a 79 3.0 from an SC as you noted. You have license to mod in any way, shape of form imho.

I wouldn't turbo the flares unless you have a turbo motor, or like an IROC look with a high output NA 3.0.

As for the look and the balance of the flares you are having issue with, it might be the Carrera 3.0 wing adding some visual weight to the back and making the rear flares look small. (BTW sc flares grafted on as noted before.)

If this was my car, I'd make it a Carrera 3.0 clone. Just change the front valance to the earlier style and slap on a "carrera" sticker on the side. :-)

Thank you, that's very informative as I can now see exactly what I have.
It makes perfect sense to me and yes the rear does look a little unbalanced and heavy, but I do like the wing.

I don't really mind the overall look at all, but was really undecided about the front fenders.

The car will only be used for circuit sprints and tarmac hillclimb events in the UK and unlikely to be used on the Highway.

I have an IROC front end on the shelf and some 930 weld on flares, but they may remain on the shelf for now.
I do like the IROC front look but guess it would be an exercise to marry it up to the existing front fenders, but anything is possible.
I will investigate the front valence you suggested and see if ther is anything available.

Unless it had a turbo engine, I would not go full turbo body as I don't think it is a worthwhile execise in this case.

The car was originally 'Kermit Green' I also don't like red cars so now it is affectionall known as Kermit...... so green it will be.
