Which sender? Oil level in tank? No you can't. But it may be repaired sometime.

Depends, it could be just loose and dirty. Zero risk to take the time to clean and test. The resistor wire can break or wear through so these do go bad, but as I show it's possible to take it to bits and tighten things up and reassemble. For me it's fun and low stress attempting a repair on something that is "broken" more often than not it can be fixed

I do the same..
Like you, I also enjoy attempting to repair things, seems a waste to just toss them out. Its not the $$ but the sense of accomplishment especially with they are built to not be taken apart. Had my share of wins!
I took it out, cleaned and tested but get nothing...I, actually my mechanic is sure its the resister. I may have sent power to the sender and burnt it while messing with the rear tail light plug that came apart. I searched asked around to see if a resister can be bought, it looks like I can take the sender apart down to the resister and change. Where to go from here? Quote:

The resistor is a very thin wire wound around a non-conductive board. The arm wipes across this wound coil, progressively making the resistor wire shorter..... So you could take it to bits and figure out what the wire gauge is and rewind it.

are you familiar with the URO sender...may buy it. $104.00 looks like ebay, $76
But I will still attempt to fix mine!...cant let it go. |

When I had both senders to bits, I noticed that the 1986 one had silver plated pivot points, the ground path for the resistance is though the pivot, silver is a very good conductor, even when oxidized. I am sure the URO sender works, but I also know there is a difference in quality of manufacturing, and am sure they cut out expensive steps like silver plating parts of the assembly.
This being said, I did buy a URO fuel level sender, as my attempt at repair of my original failed. |
