How do I remove this radio?
 

I did a search here - couldn't find the info I need.
Bentley has instructions for a factory radio, but this is an aftermarket Clarion and there doesn't seem to be any way to use the radio removal tool on it.

1988 Carrera coupe.

Any ideas on how I get this radio out?

Don't know what a radio removal tool looks like, but I know for sure these types of radio from the 90s were often sold with a pair of big "staples" that you should insert simultaneously in the four holes provided on faceplate. Is that what you have?

I had a Clarion - if it's like mine was, the "sleeve" that your photo shows has tabs on all four sides of it - these tabs were pressed in behind the metal opening of the dash, in order to secure the sleeve should you remove the body of the radio for security reasons.

Feel up immediately behind the dash, find the tabs and bend them back into the sleeve. Then you should be able to remove the sleeve, bearing in mind that wires are likely attached to the back of it, so don't pull too hard....

first you have to remove the rest of the radio from the sleeve, usually there's a recess, either 2 or 4 of them around the perimeter of the black plastic, so you can slide in a flat tool to depress some pins.

Best to google the make and model of the radio to see what the tools look like.

Then you will have the sleeve that has to be removed, some bent over tabs will usually be the only thing holding that in.

That box, I believe it's cruise control, but I know one of my cars it was in the frunk. could be wrong there.

Amazon sells radio removal kits with all kinds of tools for just a few bucks.

My aftermarket Pioneer unit slides in/out without any tool…maybe it’s broke, but as Wazzz stated it may need the special tool,but instructions say there’s a small hole that needs to be depressed in order to release the head unit from the box frame, then insert special clips/tabs into both sides and pull the unit out. This seems to be universal for removable faceplate radios.

I’d check those two small holes on your lower right side with a small pick or large paperclip if either could be a release point.

Careful though…make should everything on the faceplate lines up and those holes on head unit and that are not connection points !
You should be able to correspond all connection points and tabs on the faceplate to get an idea if these 2 holes have a special function.

That plug connector you removed, might be for the speakers/power. Trace wires never units are color coded and you might find splices.

Also check if the radio frame/sleeve is mounted using factory mounting bracket with would be secures on both sides. A rear mount would have a slngle slotted bracket strap secure to the back of the radio head unit. Might be to tight access, but someone had to install it.

Bingo! A "flat tool" (couple of framing straps) is what released it.

I'm planning to get this Blaupunkt radio, because I have seen it well reviewed in other threads on this board. Any chance the wiring can can be plug and play or can I look forward to digging deeper into the depths of the under-dash abyss?

Depends on what they did to the stock harness to get this aftermarket one to fit. My stock harness was destroyed by the oxygen thief that put my aftermarket radio in. I ended up finding an original harness socket, cut all the aftermarket garbage off what remained of the stock wiring, and recrimped the proper connectors on before putting them back into the harness socket. There's only like 4 or 5 wires for the original harness. That being said, the other harness is for the speakers, and they carved that one up pretty good, too. So it was the same deal of finding the correct speaker ends and properly crimping them on.
