What is normal pad under carpet 930

I have an '88 930 and am doing some winter clean up and have the seats out. What is the normal pad that came from the factory in these cars? It had something, right?

My car seems to just have carpet laid on the floor - no pad or anything. I'd like to put something back whether it's carpet or some of the noise / heat barrier padding folks use.

Thoughts / ideas?

Leaves, brake fluid from a leaky MS, cigarette butts, random fasteners, and business cards from the 70s. That's what's been under mine, at least.

Your car should have a 2-2.5 mm (now hard) tape like insulator on the floor surface. It tends to harden and crack/chip off on our older cars. See pix below for a detailed look. I added Dynamat to a 75 - 80% standard, largely in thee recessed square areas. Works well, not much weight gain. Brown substance is adhesive in pix.

sorry, but I don't see any factory tape in this pic. I do see the factory stampings for rigidity in the floor.

The black is the "tape" or adhesive mat used as insulation/sound deadening on the tubs. It is very rigid with time and brittle. Note the wear at the heel point under brake/accelerator area.

Thanks, yup, that is pretty much what mine looks like. It was just surprising to me that there wasn't much / anything there. I'll probably add Dynamat or similar

Here's a popular replacement from a reliable supplier.

Note that the piece is bare metal, and the indentations are stamped.

I can't imagine adding sound deadening will do much on the floor, it already has a ton of geometry/is fairly stiff, plus it has that mastic black pad glued to it; I just can't see it resonating like door panels or other large flat smooth panels. I'd leave it.

On the 964 there was rigid foam on the floors.
I have never liked anything stuck on the floor in addition to the factory tar like rigid pads. If you have a water leak it will sit under the insulation and rust or at the very least, get moldy.

I am used to the old 911’s that have basically nothing under the carpet as discussed here. However, when I was working on my 993 a number of years ago I was amazed to find the factory insulation to be about 1”-1.5” thick under the carpet. It was mostly foam with some mass loaded vinyl if I remember correctly. There is a reason those cars are a lot quieter and more refined. I really doubt Porsche would have added that sound insulation if it didn’t do anything.
