Electrical Gremlin
1983 SC.
So this has been a frustrating one. Not to long ago I noticed the turn signal flashing 2x speed so I figured a light was out. Front driver turn signal wasn't working, so bought a new bulb and thought that would be it. Ha. Swapped bulbs with the right front and still nothing (right front worked tho so bulb was good). Cleaned the connections, nothing. Rear driver and all right sides still work and show up on the tach. Driving lights on all four corners did work as well but now they are acting up. Hazard switch lights up the front driver turn signal, so I am at a loss here. Relay switch? Bad ground somewhere? Something totally else? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Try swapping relays. But you are spot on for the next steps, check grounds (obviously fuses...). You might just pull and clean the contacts on the relay and be done.

Did you by chance put LEDs in any of the sockets? That would do it too.

no leds, just went one day so I figured it was one of those things. I'll troubleshoot more this weekend. Don't want to switch to historic plates (personally hate that they are yellow) to avoid having the annual safety inspection (Virginia) so I have until next month to get it sorted.

That's another thing I don't miss about Virginia. I was getting raped in Fairfax with a couple of the cars I owned. Just bend my ass over the fender...

relay swapped and no changes. PO had front end damage professionally repaired awhile back and there were even bits of the old orange lens still in there when I started taking it apart. Its gotta be the wiring right in around the indicator so I will dig into it more today. So bizarre that the hazards work (so bulb works) but turn signal doesn't and its not like it never worked, just stopped one day.
yeah I know I need to look into the plate swap more. |

I'd try verifying the grounds for the drivers front corner. you can definitely get weird performance with a bad ground. things can change as the system tries to find a ground path for any given bulb. With the headlights off the turn signal will tend to back feed into the marker light circuit, but since it has to run through the additional light filaments it is higher resistance path and therefore the current is reduced and the bimetallic strip doesn't get as hot causing the fast flashing. Then when you turn the lights on the whole thing changes as the markers now have power and can not be used as a ground path....
Not sure what work was done associated with the front end damage, but if there was paint involved it is a good possibility the ground point had paint applied that wasn't fully removed to ensure a good metal to metal connection for the ground path. |

Well after pulling my hair out for awhile and changing the flasher relay, #9 fuse, and bulb, found a loose ground wire behind the left LED headlight which did the trick. Thanks everyone for the assistance, appreciate it.
