Help! Re-routing Oil Lines
 

Hi Pelican,

I bought a bastardized '72 that was converted to a G-body car years ago. I'm in the process of budget "proper dating" the car back to long nose. During the mock up process we noticed my forward-dated oil lines hang past my front bumper (see attached image).

Does anyone know what would be a cost effective solve to get this tucked back safely behind my front bumper? A few things to note:

- Oil lines are pushed up as high as they can be.

- Hang down past the bumper about 5 inches at the lowest point.

- Oil lines are pretty close to the tire so can’t be moved inboard

if it were a 72 would there not be any oil lines in the front of the car anywhere ?

also i dont se an image , but maybe its my PC.

It's running a '76 2.7 with the forward-dated oil lines from what I can tell.

That's the trombone cooler that is hidden with the G-body bumper. Best advice would be to remove that and replace it with a carrera cooler (with or without fan) that you can tuck up into the wheel well. That said, it might be really tight or impossible if you're keeping the battery box there. If you're not using the dual batteries then removing the battery box is probably the best approach as it'll free up a lot of space.

An alternative is to get any oil cooler- even a smaller one that fits and stuff it up there. I'm sure that CSF makes something that will fit.

And for the cheapest solution, I guess you could just cut down the trombone to make it fit... You'll have to braze some fittings on but that's not terribly difficult and won't cost much at all.

ah okay now i understand, so you are not trying to put it back to original, you are trying to relocate the oil cooler ( that is the trombone cooler ) .

originally 72 had no front lines , neither do the 2.7it wasnt until the 3.0 litre did that trombone cooler at the front show up.

That said it is a good upgrade for the 2.7 and i would go with advice posted above.

from '73 the external oil set up was standardized except for the actual which came in 3 varieties(not counting the '72 version)

'72 was a unique year of that because of the forward mounted oil tank

Reviewing my PETs for the 65-73 cars, they show both Carrera and/or Trombone style front coolers for all years. Typically, we were only installed on the S cars. My 1973 had the several of the studs for a cooler and routing of the front cooling lines installed. Trombones were available for the 1974+ cars as well.

Trombone cooler for the 73 was different, not as tall & different oil line attachment, than the 74 up cars. Looks like a later trombone that was "bent" back to sit behind the battery box which were not on the 74 up cars. The oil tank, lines, thermostat and cooler on the 73 are a one year only. They look like the 74 up stuff, but are uniquely different.
