911sc 1982 Targa Backdate reference
 

Thinking of doing a backdate on 1982 911sc. Does anyone have any links to a good blog or site where someone has documented their project? Or be willing to share their own experiences ?
I would like to learn from others rather than try to "reinvent the wheel" . It has early 'Turbo' tail which folks tell me is an original one - I want to loose that !

That's a very clean looking mid-year Targa. I personally wouldn't backdate that one.

Yeh that car is not a good car to backdate, I just did one it’s not as quick and easy as one would think to do it right. Plus your garage doesn’t look like you have the right tools.

First ask these questions:

1.) How fast do you want it done
2.) to what level: concourse, good, passable?
3.) are you rich with money? time? skills?
4.) what do you like about the car, driving it hard and regularly, to car shows, just owning it, owningit as an investment, etc...

All of those will help you figure out if you should backdate your car.

There are two ways to backdate a car: 1.) with a fat wallet and 2.) with a lot of hard work and sweat equity

Paying someone isn't a guarantee that it will be good, there are plenty of stories here about bad work, but it is easier if you have the money and can find someone good to do the work.

Doing the work yourself isn't rocket science. You need to know how to do basic wrenching on your car, you need to know how to weld, you need to know how to do body work, you need to know how to paint things, and you need to not be afraid of hurdles and other problems that will arise. You kind of need to be a mix of stupid and brave. You need chutzpah.

You can pay someone to paint the car but if you've done the other work, why not go all the way.

There are some good youtube series (Homebuilt By Jeff, Ahh Garage Time, Rennch) that have very clear documentations of the process and the issues that will arise and how they overcame them.

Now, as to whether you should, don't as us, it's not our car.

But since you kinda asked and since everyone is offering opinions, I say go for it! It's just a stupid, mass production car, you have one life to live and why not do something that challenges you, makes you grow and learn more about yourself and ultimately proud of the accomplishment...

The paint is unbelievably bad - its shrunk, cracked, wrong color, full of dust specs, has had at least 4 repaints in places, one on top of each other; it needs a bare metal respray which would involve taking front and rear fenders off to do it properly..hence the back date possibility. Rubbers are shot....
It was in a paint shop when I got it - being sanded down to get it prepared for a 'wrap' treatment.

I sold a a great '79 sc and kick my selfevery day !

Backdate and hot rod the living snot out of it. Involve your kids, make mistakes and love every minute of it. It’s just a car; make it more than that by making it yours and rad.

You don’t need to lose the tail, you need to keep it and add a front spoiler. Is not about looks, rather it’s there to add stability, combined with a front spoiler it is without question a great performance enhancer.

I have done some changes to give my car a classic vibe without changing the bumpers or fenders. The best backdate option I have done was to add opening wing windows, I did that in 2008. Then I added early mirrors and polished the targa bar.

Give Dave at TRE a call. He has helped me a ton, just ordered my parts and looking forward to getting started. I went the "proper" front clip replacement route. As long as you have a good support base (be it skills, funds, resources, or a combination of all of the above), you will be fine.

Also forget the naysayers and do what you want after doing proper research. The biggest mistake I made was worrying about what others thought after reading too many threads. Good luck!

Thanks for all the links and especially projects that I can dive into and see what their process was. (Spydermike & snbush67:) )
Once I get the rear and front bumpers , flag mirrors and targa support off (need to get them off anyway for bare metal respray) I can then decide where to go.

Given it is probably a 'real' Turbo look alike whale tail (FB 911 SC discussion group) I would like to sell it - anyone interested ? - happy to let it go for reasonable price to help cover some costs - "evil bay' seem very expensive so make me an offer. !
