‘66 912 with Mag 901 trans build question
I have a ‘66 912 that has a “numbers matching” transaxle. I want to know if I can swap the stock aluminum 901 with a magnesium 901 for a little autocross fun.
I have acquired parts for a magnesium based 901 “vowel-hill climb” trans and started on the rebuild. I got a nagging concern that it may not swap into my 912 today. I Should have asked before I got started, but here is the parts list in case it matters: Part number from the mag case that I want to swap in is 901.301.101.2R. Part number from the Aluminum case that I want to swap out is 901.301.101.02 California Motorsports intermediate plate for the mag case. California Motorsports bearing retainer for the mag case. California Motorsports side cover for the mag case. 904 Input shaft with A, E, I, O and U gear sets. 7:31 ring and pinion Gripper LSD for 901/911 (lines up with ring) Thanks for any help you all can provide to let me know if I need custom changes (axles, mounts,…?) |

I don't know why it wouldn't work. At least the new trans should bolt to the engine woth no problem.
Check that your clutch disc splines mate eith the 904 input shaft splines. I would recommend doing all the checks: pinion depth, diff bearing preload and ring and pinion backlash. Sounds like a cool project. I live in Phoenixville, too. Haven't seen many 912's running about. I work in West Chester at a indy Porsche shop and have done a few transmissions, have a bunch of the special tools. Reach out if ypu have questions or need help. |
