915 reverse gear install direction
915 reverse gear install direction: markings out or markings towards the gearbox?
On disassembly my markings were facing inwards, but my Bentley says markings should face outwards. Maybe it doesn't matter since it's reverse, or maybe the prior builder knew something I don't. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1674747673.jpg |
If your concerned, install the reverse idler gears and look at the offset as witnessed by wear on small gear, and install that way.

Numbers face outward. Perhaps less critical for reverse since it doesn't get used to much and noisiness is less of a concern.

Thanks. Makes sense.

numbers out and the wear pattern on the pic shows the gear is in backwards

Ian,
curious if the wear pattern on the gear teeth or on the outside face is the tell. Trying to learn as I go... thx |
The tooth at 10 oclock has a wear bar at the inner edge of the tooth , a dark line
If you flip the gear the dark line will be on the nut side . Then put the other shaft in and all the bearings ans sleeve and you can see the tooth match up where the dark edge is just off the other gear . Hope this helps |
