Exclamation Check out my Brand new shifter!!

This is not a blatant advertisment. (althought some of you thought so)

It is available through our hosts here at Pelican Parts.

This is a new shifter available for 911/914’s that I had the opportunity to install last week and it is a work of art!

It replaces your entire shifter, base, handle and all. All you need is your old knob or put on a new one if you don’t want to struggle to get the old one off. (that’s what I did)

It can be purchased in several configurations for throw reduction. The throw reduction I have (20%) seems to be a perfect balance between the stock setup and the extreme shortness of some other shifters I have installed.

It is VERY smooth and precise, as a matter of fact, it is the smoothest shifter I have ever driven in a 911, and I have tried almost everything….

I was able to go out and find some open space for some very spirited driving this weekend and it downshifts very smoothly and up shifts like a dream. The shifting feels so precise and I never even came close to "finding" the wrong gear that can so easily be done with a stock shifter. The side-to-side movement seems reduced and is very precise, it gives a nice feel to the overall shifting and the spring tension is just enough but not hard. It is spring gated to sit in the 3rd/4th position and has spring tension for both the 1st/2nd gate and 5th/reverse gate.

Here are some pictures of the install… The dust on the shifter is carpet fuzz from my carpet, I cleaned it all off before I put the boot on.

Sorry everyone.... I forgot to put in the link. I was trying to get the pictures down to a small enough size to post and completly forgot to let you know who builds them.......

James posted the link to the shifter above.

If you have any questions let me know. I was just out driving around during lunch and enjoying the car....

Here are two pics of where it sits in relation to the driver.

Is it gated internally? Or just sprung? W/O internal gates won't the centering springs put some sort of stress on the transmission?

James, is this your product?

Does it accept a factory shift boot?

I'm curious about the feel vs Siennas unit.

BlueSkyJaunte,

Is uses springs for the centering to the 3rd/4th gate effect. It also uses springs for 1st/ 2nd, similar to the factory springs for the 5th/reverse gate.

As far as putting stress on the transmission, I am not sure but I can certainly try and find out for you.

Slider,

Will the boot slide down more to cover the base and fill up the hole a little more? Looks good otherwise.

The boot that I have on mine is the optional "mini-boot” for an “RGruppe" look. It shows off the polished base of the shifter, but you could use the stock boot from your car or a leather boot from a later car.

Yes, this is my shifter. It does accept the factory shift boot quite easily - I have a pic but it did not make it to the website yet. The shift tower is smaller diameter than the factory version, so everything will look stock if you desire that. It also accepts the factory knob.

As for the spring gate putting a side load on the transmission linkage - I don't feel this is a real issue that needs to be addressed. I have not seen evidence that there is appreciable wear caused by the slight side load.

The parts affected are stationary once the gear in engaged afterall, and a slight preload may actually be better than letting the contact points be free to vibrate against one another.

James... Will this help my situation?

I have an 86 with the 915 tranny.

1) It grinds into reverse and 1st gear all the time, unless I have the clutch depressed for several long seconds. At every stop light, I have to shift into 2nd then back into 1st to avoid the grind. There is no way to downshift to first when the car is running faster than just a couple MPH without significant grind.

2) Since I had the clutch done recently... It sometimes is balky trying to shift into 1st and 2nd. The shifter doesnt want to Move... and I sort of have to force it in gear. This is without grinding and clutch depressed for several seconds.

I know #1 is probably worn synchros... is #2 related to improper clutch adjustment... bad shifter... or both?

Thanks. If it will help these issues....I will certainly buy one of your shifters immediately.

Slider,

Where are you in Colorado? I would love to come feel how it shifts before buying one for my 86. I am in Fort Collins.

Erik,

Sounds like your clutch may be out of adjustment or your clutch cable has stretched. A guy here at work was having similar problems and found out that his cable was worn and wouldn't allow the proper amount of adjustment. Once he replaced it he was much happier with how his car engaged all the gears. Just my .02.....

Hi Bill,

I would be glad to let you mess around with it before you decide.

I am in Arvada (pretty close to Broomfield/Louisville).

Will you be at the Mountain View Drivers ED in two weeks? I will be there all weekend.

If not, just let me know and we can figure something out.

I have thought of going, but since I have a cab and have not installed a roll bar, I obviously can't participate.

Maybe I will come to check out your set up.

Slider:

I read on the shifter website that it does not have a reverse lock-out. What's your experience so far? Any problems with nicking reverse, or accidentally grinding the gears?

Thanks.

I have not nicked reverse yet and I think that it is spring loaded enough to prevent me from doing so. And no grinding at all In any up shifts or down shifts.

Erik - I'll just second that your problem sounds like the clutch.

I will not profess that this shifter is a cure-all - just another incremental improvement to make these cars shift better.

Replacement of worn shift bushings and proper clutch operation will do more for shifting improvement than anything.
