915 pinion bearings
Hi,
I removed the pinion shaft in the 915 out of my '83 SC and the roller bearing outer race that is supposed to be a press fit, on the pinion gear end of the shaft, will slide out of the case. The bearing pocket is smooth, not chewed up, but I know this is not right. Do I need a new differential housing or is there some other fix? If I need the housing, how much can I expect to pay? Any leads on where I might buy one? Thanks, Pat |

Pat,
We see an increasing number of transmission cases that have lost the interference on the pinion roller bearing. We have a restoration process that shrinks an insert in the case, this restores the fit of the pinion roller bearing race, plus it updates the input shaft roller bearing to use the 930 roller bearing, same as the '85 and '86 915's. Our salvage operation not cheap, just over $900 exchange, however, your case is blueprinted, new shift rail bushes installed, new studs etc and better than new. You should be able to find a good used final drive housing from some of the Porsche dismantlers, expect to pay about $400 -$500, they are aware of when they have a good one - where the Pinion roller bearing still fits - so they price accordingly.
