Euro Side Marker Light Install Question(s)
I have found these threads:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/897882-amber-euro-side-marker-fender-lights.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/786238-euro-side-marker-lamp-installation-question.html and am part of this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1057990-wiring-front-turn-signals-2.html I now have all the parts, have found the proper connections in the harness but...am not in a place right now to remove the fenders. I understand I'll be drilling holes for the lights themselves...and my question is: Has anyone had a ROW fender off lately or installed the side markers on a US spec car and if so, for the latter, how are these routed through the fender? The wiring from the harness (to the light itself) has rubber grommets: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1675982334.jpg and I guess my assumption would be pre-drilled holes for the wiring from the body to the installed light. If anyone has done this unique modification and can recall or has a photo of the fender off to expose the routing well...that would be great. Hopefully someone has some experience with this. I grew up in Europe and with 911s, Saabs and Land Rovers and we always have had side markers on our cars...and being tired of the mandatory engine drops and repairs through ownership - - this year was a stereo project and this project which is something I've always wanted to have on at least one of my US spec 911's...car just spun over 200,000 miles gets driven almost dailt and will go with me to my deathbed - so body work for this is not a big deal. Traffic in San Antonio/TX is becoming a nightmare and this to me "justifies" this project finally... Anyway, if anyone has some insight I'd love to hear from you. Thanks everyone... Erik |

I did this on my '87 several years ago, so it is a bit fuzzy in my memory, but fishing the small harness is actually pretty easy through a hole already there from the factory (look way up in the wheel well; it should be plugged). Then inside the frunk, right there, is a wire loom/connector ready to plug in from the factory (unused in the US cars). I am out of town and cannot look at my car, but the wiring part was pretty easy if I recall correctly. Good luck. |
I did this to a US '89 chassis and to be truthful, I do not recall for sure, but I think there was a hole already there for this wire.
I did a look, but I could not tell (and cannot remember) whether the hole was always there or I drilled it..... You of course have to drill the outer fender, but that is not a biggie. D. |
Thanks for the responses so far - Seems most did this long ago and I don't blame others for not doing this due to the value uptick of the cars overall.
The threads I find are pretty dated... Hopefully taking off the fenders will give me an answer and I will be visiting two reputable independent shops here in Texas - hopefully they have seen a few non US cars and can help. I'll keep pushing on and again, thank you for the responses! Erik |
If it helps I can take some pics of my euro spec car tonight.

This is my '89 USA spec Carrera shell prior to painting...arrow points to the hole I believe the harness routes through, and I did not drill it. There is nothing else at that location that would go through there that I can think of. D |
I have been thinking about this mod for a while on my 964. Haven't got a good look at a ROW car but I can see a couple of plugs in the area between the door and the fender on mine. One of these days when I get a chance I am going pull a fender liner an see if I can reach the plugs without pulling a fender.

Thanks for the responses - Was just out driving today here in TX and they are adding so many 2 tiered turning lanes with highway updates I really want to have the side markers... Photos are helping a lot. Would like to use factory pre-drilled holes as opposed to cutting my own. I do respect the car in that regards...especially after seeing the questionable things the previous owner had done. Although I am making the car my own there is a certain respect I think one must have... Appreciate everyone taking the time to respond. Kind Regards, Erik |
After searching my YouTube subscriptions I remembered this guy doing body work :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo1rORej6w4 At about the 6:30 mark, stopping repeatedly to watch and rewind I think I have my answer for wiring...actually there are different shots throughout the video showing the wire/wiring. I think his is an 87', mine is an 86' but maybe this can help others along the way... Erik |

Thanks for posting. |
Were Euro side marker lights installed on long hoods, or just later cars?
