Picking a fuel tank for a 1970 with a 3.2 going into it
Good morning - hoping to get some thoughts and tap into some hard earned wisdom here to make sure I approach this the right way.
I have a 1970 911e shell that came to me without engine and missing its fuel tank. I'm planning on running a 3.2 with factory Motronic. Since I need to source a fuel tank anyway I'm thinking that I should source a later one from a car that would have had a 3.2/Motronic since it will have the proper fittings and the later tank should fit properly in the earlier car. Yes/no? Other suggestions? Thanks!

The later Carrera tanks should fit but realize the fuel lines off the tank are very different.
The later tanks connections are far out to left and right. The early tanks are nearly centered You should consider an aluminum cross bar for attaching the fuel pump and realize you’re making up fuel lines front and rear. Bruce |

Good morning Bruce, thanks for the response.
Well, a tank designed to fit one of the MFI and CIS longhoods work better then? They would both have return lines I believe, yes? Thanks.

With my EFI conversion, we went with a larger SC tank as it had the proper return fittings. Please note you will not be able to fit the standard spare and the charcoal filter won't bolt up properly, but the added capacity is a nice bonus.

Any fuel injected 911, including MFI and CIS, will have accommodation for return lines to the tank. I'd guess any of them will work. You'll probably wind up making fuel lines whichever way you go. Personally I'd want new fuel lines anyway.

Try to find a clean stock tank, rather than a Dansk repop. Seriously.

Thanks for the information and coaching, very much appreciated. Factory FI tank will be found and used.

The later tanks will require you to modify the protection pan that bolts to the suspension points and covers up the fuel pump and brake master.
I adapted a 3.2 pump into a '69E with the original fuel tank, I had Len Cummings from this board make me the fuel lines with proper compression fittings for the pump high pressure out to the hard line in the tunnel and for the return back to the tank. The routing of the inlet to the fuel pump is a bit cleaner (straighter) with the newer tanks and of course the extra capacity but it's not a drop-in replacement. Bill |

In the process of doing that conversion but with a 70T. I used a 84 tank like John suggested. Get with Len Cummings (BoxsterGT) here on the site and he'll make you the exact fuel lines you need. Just give him your specs. Easy to install with motor and tank out. Just saw Bills post and you could keep your original tank and Len can make lines to that tank from your 3.2.
