The "Other" Porsh - Snubbed: your waves may vary.

No love from the guy in a red G-Body 911 Coupe that pulled up beside us tonight on the 4 lane in NC. Initially gave him a spirited honk of appreciation and thumbs up as we passed by him pulling out onto the highway. He caught up to us quickly, then pulled beside, so I look over expecting a wave or thumbs up too, but instead he just kept looking straight ahead. That point I rolled down the window and gave another thumbs up, but I think it only bothered him.

It's not the first time I've been "judged" in the Cayenne GTS. Won't be the last either. Anyone else have this experience driving newer P-cars and being snubbed by fellow air-cooled crew? Seems the tables have turned from the way it use to be.

I wave at the new P-cars when driving my old 911 - it's like I'm invisible to them...

Dude, you're driving an SUV. SUVs are not cool no matter what brand or model it is. Don't get mad at me, I didn't make the rules.

Ditto experience to Fanaudical: cruising on the interstate in my 85 carrera I noticed a couple about to pass me in an Cayenne, imagined they surely must be interested and chatting about seeing an old air-cooled 911 out and about, they are such a unique shape, looked over as they passed, expecting smiles and thumbs up but nada. Not even a glance. I had to chuckle, time marches on.

My experience is that people driving much newer Porsches such as the Cayenne or the Panamera for the most part don’t know or recognize older air cooled Porsches, it’s just not on their radar. For example, a friend bought a new Maserati. I told him about the performance specs of the 1970’s Merek and the Bora. He had no idea about those older Maseratis. I think the same is true for people buying newer Porsches, they know nothing about the marque, nothing. I speak with new BMW owners, they have no clue that the BMW emblem is a white propellor spinning against a blue sky and that BMW initially made airplane engines. And these people buying new Mercedes, well don’t get me started.

I plow with a jeep tj. My place and some family nearby. I forgot how many waves I need to politely return when I’m in the jeep. I get back into the Cayenne and I’m thankful no one bothers to wave at the pig.

I saw a guy in a red 964 with black Carrera script last weekend in the DC Area. He waved begrudgingly, but at least it was something. He was driving like a maniac.

I'll typically get a wave from the 911, Cayman and Boxster, but the sedans and SUVs no. I think those buyers are more often after prestige than a particular love of Porsche. That's okay I'll wave at whoever.

I had a guy in Cayenne follow me to a grocery store parking lot and try to buy my last air cooled car. Freaking stalkers. Leave me alone, I just want to go buy some food…

Should have fired off a few rounds with your xfiles weapon. In this day and age some people won’t make eye contact with other drivers, sort of like NY subway where everyone stares at their phone.

I'm running out of people to wave to. I seem to e the only aircooled 911 guy around here.

I've taken to waving to the VW guys instead.

The VW and vintage BMW guys are super friendly. I get way more waves from those guys than watercooled Porsches. We have "Road America" license plates in Wisconsin, which are basically a car enthusiasts secret handshake. If I see the black plates it's pretty safe that they're cool.

Last summer, a blue Macan came up on me and both the driver and passenger waved, I of course waved back.

I now pretty much wave at any sports car- we get it!

I was told by another 911 owner that was riding in my 72 911 that I shouldn't flash my lights back at a 914 coming towards us. This was in early 1972 and I was not familiar with light flashing rules, I started to tell him that I knew the 914 owner but decided quickly to remain silent. I want to confess that over the next few years I did flash my lights at 914's.
Please forgive.

FYI, flashing lights bends the inner bar in the hi/lo switch and eventually you lose low beam.
