Question Fuel Tank Swap

Will a plastic fuel tank from a 91 C2 fit into an 87 Carrera?
Thanks.

No way. Here is a pic of a 964 tank.

Thank you...those bolt holes will definitely not line up!!! So much for that idea.

Too bad. The plastic tanks have a lot of advantages.

Yes yes I know this thread is old enough to drive...

I find it hard to believe the tank wouldn't fit in a G-body car.

You would have to install a different frunk floor pan to fill the hole. But why wouldn't the 964 tank fit? Is there some other structural difference between 964 & 3.2 Carrera?

Would be great to have the fuel tank inside the wheelbase as well as gaining some additional frunk luggage space.

Well, torsion bar mounts for one. Maybe the G-body steering rack as well. If you really wanted plastic, you could probably make an 1973RS plastic tank fit more easily.

The fuel lines /pump locations are also completely different.

Trying to find a photo of the 964 body shell without the tank in it. It's not that I want a plastic tank. I'm intrigued by where/how it's mounted in the car (within the wheelbase) Plus it lends itself to more frunk space.

The 964 forum at Rennlist should have project photos with the fuel tank out, as you need to remove it to access the HVAC system.

Here is one: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/1135829-restoring-my-92-964-cup.html#post15734797

There we go...

Unsurprisingly the body structure underneath the tank looks very different from a Gbody car.

That answers my question

Thank you
