It Starts, it does not start, etc

Got a ''86 turbo. Typically it starts within a second of turning the ignition on. But, on occasion, it takes several attempts for it to fire, and when it does, it's immediate with no hesitation. The occasional "several attempt to start program" happens regardless if the car has just run and still hot, or if it's sat several days.

Any clue as to what I should check ?

Does it take a couple of turns of the key to get the starter to engage or does it take a couple of cranks of the starter before the car starts?

MRM :

It takes a couple of cranks of the starter before the car starts.

Actually it takes 7-10 cranks of the starter, each being 5-6 seconds of duration. Then probably the next 10-12 starts are without a problem, the car starts fine. Very intermitent.
