I would think appearance is why Mikez did it...weight saving can be done with any fiberglass bumper.

The angle iron is aluminum and and only 3 inches long.....

As to saving weight, probably 12 lbs. The assemblies are heavier than they look. I mostly did it to be a little more period correct and to have a different style rear end.
