912 Motor Swap

Not quite a rebuilding question but wasn't sure where to put this one, this is my first post and first porsche project after reading Wayne's books I couldn't resist.

I'm sure someone out there has put an early 911 engine in a 912. Looking for advice.

Project is: 1969 911E 2.0 MFI into a 1969 912.

I have the mounts, oil tank, lines, fuel pump, tach, cd box.

I plan on doing the rebuild to 2.2 Specs as Wayne recommends to learn the motor. Other than installing/exchanging these parts what am I missing or getting into?

Thanks in advance.

I have looked into this extensively, as I have 1965, 1966, and 1969 912s and a 1970 2.2T engine plus mounts, oil tank, cd unit.

Its an excellent choice in my humble opinion. the 69 912 has the long wheel base, same torsion bars, and shocks as the 911 did. The most mysterious part is the wireing. The solution is to ignore it for the most part. The cd unit had clearly identified terminals that will accept normal female spade terminals available anywhere. Just wire them up according to the id. Ie plus to battery plus, minus to gnd, coil to coil or whatever I don't remember the exact designaiton but it is obvious when you look at it. Just hook it up accordingly using your own wire. As for the tach, there is a converter in an electrical box, if you have it use it, if not send the tach to Hollywood tach to be reconditioned and have the electronics replaced so you no longer need the tach converter. About the same cost either way and you end up with a as new tach if you do the Hollywood thing.

The only thing there may be a hickup on is the flywheel/pressure plate clutch. You may need an old style 911 flywheel/clutch/pressure plate to interface directly with the transmission. If you have the complete 911 aluminum stuff I am not sure if it will mesh with the tranny directly or not. Things were changing a lot between 1969 and 1973 in this area. I had the old style 911 stuff so I quit researching the point there.

As far as I know the 69 E clutch and flywheel will bolt right up to your 901 box which in 69 still has the older type push clutch. You will need to weld in the corner mounts and remove the 912 mounts. You will also need the MFI fuel pump but you say you have that.

Good luck

I did the conversion about a year back.

It is quite an easy task. As long as you have the oil tank, fly wheel mounts etc.

It took me about 5 hours to install a oil tank from a 3.2 using an angle grinder and a dye grinder.

About 1 hour to cut out the old engine mounts.

About 1 hour to weld in the new mounts. And 4 mounth to get a flywheel.

No problem with the gear box or the fuel pump, I am running an old AC fuel pump to Webers.

The gear box clutch cable etc is all as is in the 912.

When you have done it look into upgrading the brakes, I would hate to run with the old solid 912 rotors.

Best of luck, you will love the car when you have done this little upgrade.
