915 Transmission Side Cover Upgrade

I have a 73 911 with a 915 transmission magnesium side cover and want to replace it with the stronger aluminum side cover with the extra inner rib.

What are the step to make the side cover change?

To do it right you’ll need to reset the bearing preload and backlash.

Matt. when my 915 Gearbox is full of 210 (to the side port). will that cover the gears partially at least? I am concerned that longer term storage with some on gears not being in oil, will damage it due to condensation buildup etc.. this is the box with active first gear I just got from winders. should I overfill it?

apologies for the hijack. btw. I was told that as long as you are careful, you can swap side plates without resetting pre had etc....

No, it won't immerse all the gears incl. the ring gear.

I wouldn’t just swap it. The old ones flex over time and bearings wear and loosen up. There’s no guarantee it’s currently correct in the first place.

On the storage, you’ll want to leave it in neutral and spin the mainshaft by hand once in a while to rotate the gears through the oil and keep them coated.

I’d consider the CMS side plate: https://californiamotorsports.net/products/cms-915-billet-side-plate

I used all their parts to build my race spec 901 trans and am very satisfied as a customer.

Unless you live in the swamp, don't worry about corrosion inside your transmission. The gear oil leaves enough of a coating to prevent corrosion for years. Mine is living proof.

Frank is once bitten, twice shy. He’s already lost a previous gearbox to such corrosion.

That makes me wonder how the moisture got in there. Or does he live on the beach in Florida?

I humbly beg to differ.

thanks matt. you are correct. jeez I am still paying for that huge error. to the tune of 8000 bucks returned to the purchaser.......( which I could have blown off, but not my style..) nothing that I thought I did wrong other than store it outside, covered, in PA winters (back when we actually had winters) ( Btw this was a short geared rather trick race G50-01 gearbox). it had delvac in it . but might have somehow got moisture inside. I DID powerwashe the thing before storage . ... I did not routinely spin the mainsheet. indeed I am badly bitten..... and highly concerned about storing a spare gearbox properly.....

jm. that CMS plate looks very nice and sturdy. Just for good measure I will have the preload etc redone. Matt, as the resident guru, do you endorse this CMS plate?

I do. It has a larger 930 sized bearing in it. I stopped making my own a few years back and have been selling theirs since. The Wevo and Patrick versions are equally nice.

Is this for my old gearbox? The Bill Rader side cover on there is great and does not need to be replaced.
