Removing the steering shaft lower bearing

Hey fellows,

as with most 911s, the steering wheel on my 911 (77) wobbles far too much. I have read all the instructions, what alternatives there are, the 928 sleeve and so on. I would like to remain original, however, have already bought the parts and started to disassemble everything. I have to say that I don't want to remove the whole unit, just change the steering rod and then the bearings.

this is how far i got: i got the steering rod out with a puller tool, also the upper bearing, which is always a lot of trouble. when i look inside the tube, i see a lot of dirt and the lower bearing can no longer be rotated either.

in plain text: I'm only missing the lower ball bearing. i've tried to knock it out from above, but i have the impression that it doesn't move at all. I've probably already destroyed my steering rod with it, the thread looks crooked and I can't get the nut on it anymore.

no matter, how do I get the ball bearing out - in the installed state? any ideas? Thanks very much!

There’s grooves inside the steering tube that have circlips you need to remove. 47 49.

Wait a minute, there is a circlip holding that f*** bearing inside the tube?

Guess it's just too dirty to see that f*** b**** ;-))

Thank you so much!

And re the rod, how much you need for that? Trying to fix the thread first but if that doesn't work, yours would be an option!

Yes, circlip is pressed against the inside of the tube and is really hard to see. The circlip has really small ear holes. A mirror and a spray can of brake fluid is likely your best friend. Also, remember that the are at least two lengths of steering tubes and upper shafts depending on the year. The ones in my ‘71 are longer than my ‘78 based RST.
Good luck.
