soft lug nut socket and new lug nuts
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1678035893.jpg
My 40 year old Automotion soft lug nut socket finally cracked and disintegrated internally so I'm in search of another. Pelican offerings including the Stoddard model dont seem to have the internal plastic liner to protect the lug nuts. Are there any other options for lug nut sockets with internal protection? And I need 10 new closed lug nuts to replace my well used fronts. Looks like several options but I want some tough black ones that can handle years of off/ons. Looking for recommendation here too. Thanks ahead to the Pelican Brain Trust. This site should be required reading for air cooled owners |
Don't know about a replacement socket. I just use a regular cross-wrench or ratchet/socket. Occasionally I spray the nuts with some matte black trim paint. You would have to look real close to notice they were repainted.

It’s been a while but I think I found some HB plastic lined sockets. I also cut up a bunch of plastic squares out of freezer bags. I get a couple of cushy torque on/offs per square. This is a useful hack I found somewhere on this forum.

I bought the non-marring socket at Autozone and have been happy with it:
https://www.autozone.com/ratchets-sockets-and-wrenches/socket/p/titan-products-1-2in-drive-19mm-non-marring-lug-nut-socket/453036_0_0 It does not have a plastic insert, but it is relatively soft brass and the corners have clearance cutouts. Oh yeah - the plastic bag hack mentioned above is a good one that I also use. I also touch-up the lug nuts with satin black paint if I want them to look perfect. Full disclosure: I have (2) sets of lug nuts. One that I keep looking perfect for use with the OEM Fuchs rims and another that is far more beat up and that I use with my MM Cup replicas that have the nuts so deep that you can't see them. |

Careful with that one, it’s not actually soft metal/brass, it’s chrome vanadium which is what you want to make a socket from. The protection on that socket is on the outside to prevent damage to wheels. It will still damage alloy nuts eventually |
I got one from Vertex
https://www.**********.com/porsche-lug-nut-soft-socket-specialty-tool-p-12314.aspx along with new titanium black lug nuts from a pelicanite (search threads) the socket does a great job to protect the new lug nuts |
