Silicone vs Nitrile Gaskets

I've got a set of the red silicone valve cover gaskets on my car right now and love them - no leaks - no mess - great stuff.

With this in mind, I called a few local suppliers of aircraft parts to hunt down some bulk red silicone material to make up a few gaskets for the sump plate.

Well.... to make a long story shorter, 2 different sources mentioned that I would be better off with nitrile as the red silicone is great for high temperatures but not good for use if its in contact with oil or other hydrocarons.

Nitrile was the suggested replacement - black 1/16" thick.

Any comments from those with experience?

Don't the silicone valve cover gaskets meet hot oil?

yup - thats sort of the problem. The guys I was talking to sell nothing but gasket material and both were of the opinion the red silicone shouldn't be used in a hydrocarbon environment. My only thought is that Real Gaskets, etc are using a different spec or grade that is happy with oil?

Very interesting . . . . Permatex would probably take issue with that opinion. I used to use permatex as valve cover gaskets on small blocks and pontiac V-8s rather than the cork gaskets that would stick to the heads after getting hot a couple of times, never had a problem.

Go figure.

BTW: I have the silicon gaskets too and not a drop of oil from them.
