2.7 muffler
I have a 77 with SSI's and stock muffler (Bischoff). I dont hear that well and my exhaust is too quiet. Any recommendations for a sportier sounding motor? I was also thinking of getting the fabspeed "open" airbox.
Thanks in advance. Last edited by Aloha911sc; 03-08-2023 at 02:50 PM.. |

M&K 2/1 if you want to hear the engine but still want to be able to cruise in moderate comfort. 2/2 if you want to hear all engine, all the time.

Its a little more expensive, but the SCART Riva/Supersound that I have on my '76 2.7L sounds incredible. I purchased from RStrada and it arrived pretty quickly. I may put in my will that instead of singing at my funeral I just want everyone to listen to a 3 minute recording of that exhaust note...

Common question, buy you really need to listen to an engine with the proposed muffler
This is a common question on most car sites, BUT to avoid having a bad/unacceptable/expensive outcome, it is really better to actuall ride in/drive a similar car with the proposed muffler, so you can see what works for you, at idle, at cruise, on acceleration and at full throttle.
That is my best shot at it, tastes vary. But, I was seduced by the sound of a Scart Riva, (just a you tube clip of a similar car), so my long term restomod, (10 years and counting), is hopefully going to fire, this spring/summer, (74 2.8, twin plug, 10.5 cr, MS2 efi on PMO ITBs and SSIs). Good luck chris |

Difficult decisions…. When I rebuilt the 3.0 motor on my SC targa recently, I went with SSI’s and needed to backdate the exhaust. To save some $$, I found a good used Dansk “OEM” style 2in 1out muffler with a 60mm outlet and figured it would be a safe (quiet) starting place and I could upgrade to some sort of sport muffler someday in the future. I ran the Dansk for nearly 1,000 miles and realized it is a LOT louder than I had expected. Sometimes I loved the sound. But for open top driving around town (especially with my wife in passenger seat) the Dansk was annoyingly loud. Even just running down residential streets in second gear at 2,000 rpm or so, it was amazingly noisy. Just this week I took the Dansk off and installed an original Bischoff from a 2.7 car (date code 1977, with the EGR port welded shut). The engine is MUCH quieter but still sounds great to my ears. A lot of the wonderful “machinery” kinds of sounds that a 911 engine makes are more at the forefront and not drowned away by the sound coming from the muffler. I’ll probably miss the Dansk sounds sometimes and/or will wonder what a lot of new muffler options sound like. But for now I am pleased with the SSI/Bishoff combination. I guess the moral of this story is that you might consider keeping your original Bishoff, in case you might ever decide to go back to it.

I love the raspy /growling sound of the 2/2 Dansk sport, the part number is "92.510DUAL"
superb for 2.7./2.4 it was great with my 3.0 it is great as well with my 3.4

Since these mufflers are all expensive, I would attend some cars 'n coffee events or other car events that feature Porsches, and listen to a bunch of different mufflers to try to identify the right one for you. I had a SS free-flow 2-in 1-out muffler with SS large-tube heat exchangers on my 3.2, it sounded great but was just too loud for me. I swapped to a stock Dansk 2-in 1-out muffler and it is just right for my ears.

+1 what gsseriek said. If your car is a daily driver, you will get tired of the exhaust noise. Even with the stock OE muff, 911 engines still sound quite distinctive. Yes, I've tried several mufflers/exhausts too.
