White smoke, then cloud, then smoke in exhaust
Hello,
I changed the oil tube from the engine to the oil dip stick tank on my 1980 911. Oil of course went away. But I misjudged the amount of lost oil and ended up overfilling the tank when I put oil back in... In addition, the car had been sitting there for around 6 month (winter, bad weather...)... After pooring oil, I took it for a short spin, around 3km... Upon my return, it stalled and I discovered that they was a LOT of white smoke comming out of the exhaust pipe (a truck sized cloud maybe)... The car would not hold in Idle and stall.... I removed around 2.5l of oil, and restarted it... Oil now at a good level. The smoke situation rapidly improved, with white "cloudlets" comming out... And the car would happily idle. I let it idle for around 20mn and the smoke turned to white wisps... But the car never made it to 180° (operating temperature)... Rain comming down again, I was not able to continue the experience and take it back out for another spin... Any idea what is happening and what I should do? Thanks for all your advices, Cyrille |

Its not a big deal. When the tank is overfull the engine will pull the oil in through that tube. Make it half on the stick at idle warm and itll be ok

The tank overfill situation will burn off eventually, good long drive does the trick as Porschedude930 said.
Might be a bit difficult to determine when all the remaining oil is gone from the cylinders on startup due to general moisture burning off on say a cold weather morning. Common also is as a (high mileage) engine sits for months, some oil could seep into cylinders just from normal wear on the valve guides. This also burns off after 5-10 minutes. |

I've learned to keep my oil level in the middle; between the full and low marks. Even keeping my '78 SC at "full" would occasionally generate enough smoke to knock down all the mosquitoes for a 1/4 mile. When she's in the middle, no clouds. Michael J '78 SC |

Most of it is in the exhaust system and may take an hour or so to burn off. I usually recommend a midnight drive.
