84 suspension
In the process of lowering my suspension ( euro) and replacing the rear torsion bars ( 26mm) . Indexing the rear seems straightforward with the help of baseline measurements and the elephant racing calculator. I’m hoping that I can adjust the fronts by backing off on the screw. Question is…..counterclockwise….backing off will lower? Or does it load the torsion bar to raise? No one seems to specify this basic point. Will the screw adjust give up or provide 3/4” like the back eccentric? Thanks
On hold for the return of my springplates from plating. |

Yes backing off will lower, too many variables to give you a specific number on how much it will lower the car.

Not sure if your vehicle has the spacer between the strut and tower if it does I would just remove that.

Thanks guys….got it. Spacer removed when I replaced shocks a few years ago. Gap still too much. I’ll play with it. Not a big deal to yank the bar out and reindex.

You can do it without even raising the car. Just reach under with a socket (forget the size) and loosen the adjustment screw. I recently did this, and took out 2 turns (counted out 8 ~90 degree turns). It probably lowered about an inch.

Ian, fine point, but doesn't that depend on what bump steer changes you've made? If that is set up correctly, the toe should not change when raising or lowering the car moderately.

My recollection is that you want those front adjuster arms about 1/2-way in their range of adjustment when the front is set and sitting on the ground (otherwise they occasionally "click" on you).

Fanatical is correct. The adjuster should be more or less in the middle of its adjustment range. And the front bars don't index like the rear bars. Instead you take off the adjuster cap at the rear end of the torsion bar and move it one spline, then reinstall and readjust it.

I complicated matters by going with a 26 mm bar in the rear. So the unloaded angle will be set to 26 degrees from 34.5 with the stock bar. I agree……… I’d like the front and rear adjusters to be in the middle when the height is set. A full alignment will be completed when done. I’d like to corner balance…..will see on that.
