Clock Kaput
 

After installing my Rennline phone mount on my '84 911, my clock stopped working. I know it has nothing to do with the mount. At the back of the gauge there is a connection with a couple of brown wires which I believe are ground. In addition, there are a couple of black wires which I believe are power and should be hot at all times because the clock keeps time with the key off. There seems to be no power to the black wires at all. The fuse for the clock is fine. Have I identified the wires correctly? Should the black wires be powered at all times? Any idea why the clock stopped working? As always, thanks for the help.

The clock should have one always hot black wire and a brown ground wire as well as a red(or blue ) with a trace for the light. The black wire should be hot. I would check the fuse again.
Or look for another black wire that may have fallen down in the frunk when you pulled out the clock.

Thanks Queenie. The interior lights and glovebox light are on the same fuse and they work, so don't think it's the fuse. The black wire is not hot which I think is the problem. More fun with electricity!

Jumped a hot wire from another source to the clock and the clock works! So the culprit is definitely the dedicated black wire for the clock that for some reason doesn't have power. Double checked fuse and it's definitely good. Next step is to find out why the black wire doesn't have power. when it should be constantly hot. The wiring diagram calls out a clock relay. Could that have failed?

I don’t have a relay for either of my clocks - I did have two black wires behind my clock in my 88. One hot all the time and one that wasn’t- they looked the same.

Thanks Queenie. The two black wires are joined together in a single connector and one of the wires goes off somewhere behind the dash. I assume this is one power source that goes to several components. I found reference to the relay in the wiring diagram and it's supposedly behind the tach or speedo. Thanks for taking an interest!
