Transmission noise

In 1st and 2nd gear when coming to a stop I can hear a whine type noise. The sound continues even after the clutch is depressed and stops when I pull it out of gear or come to a complete stop. Also, if I push the shifter firmly forward in 1st that also seems to stop it.

It's a MY 82 with 125K miles and shifts just fine. Changed the transmission fluid about 7,000 miles ago with Kendall GL5 80W/90. Probably been going on for a while just never payed attention or had the tunes up too high.

It’s that bearing right up against first gear upper left.

Is this something that should be fixed sooner than later? Has this roller bearing been known to fail catastrophically? Getting ready to do a bunch of front end work, just trying to plan my project list. Thanks,

I personally wouldn’t drive the car until it’s fixed. Those gears are all held in very tight perfectly parallel alignment. Even the slightest slop in the bearing can cause the gears start to wear. It’s not as bad as the ring and pinion, but it is something that warrants a rebuild soon.
