I noticed in Wayne Dempsey's rebuild book ,a picture of an after market fan/alt. belt tensioner assembly. It looks like a pretty good idea, compared to using shims to achieve the correct belt tension. Is it a bolt on? Why don't you see them used more?

Which page? I thought I'd looked that book over pretty carefully, but I don't remember and picture of an alternative belt tensioner. Was it described in the text also?
Never-mind, I found it. Picture on page 94, text on the bottom of page 93 "for endurance racers". I don't know why it isn't more popular, or why it isn't being promoted as an "upgrade". It doesn't look that difficult unless you have to drop the engine to replace the pulley on the end of the crank. I admit changing/tensioning that belt is a bit "tedious". I put a new one on when I got the car and intend to just keep replacing it every couple years so, hopefuly, I never have to do it on the side of the road.
