First Longhood, ‘70 911E.

I recently picked up a ‘70 911e with numbers matching engine/trans and original MFI that needed a little bit of love. It’s been non stop on this car fixing all of the small things on this car.

The car ran but not very well at all. The fuel filter was replaced right before I picked up the car to get it running in the first place so I wanted to check ignition next. The plugs were a heat range too hot, plugs wires read inconsistent resistant, and points gap was too small. I installed a 123ignition dizzy, clewett wires, ngk plugs, and new coil. Wired it all in with the stock CDI box and set timing at 2500rpm with 0° advance to confirm timing at Z1. Set up my timing curve in the app with help from iCarp on the board.

After replacing all the new ignition the car ran tremendously better but would begin to cut fuel after 10-15 minutes of driving. I decided to check in the tank and sure enough the tank was filled with rust. Pulled the tank and found the fuel pick up screen to also be clogged and torn. Filled the tank with rust remover overnight, flushed a couple times, and it came out worlds better.

Car drove better but now would hit a brick wall at 4k rpm in 3rd or second gear, almost like a rev limiter. Cue hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and sure enough only 2 psi before the filter and at the return line. I ran the feed line direct to the gauge with no exit to see if the internal fuel pressure relief valve in the pump would trigger and fuel pressure on the gauge instantly spiked to almost 30psi. This was a relief as I did not want to spend $850 on a fuel pump. This had me scratching my head and then I read into the overflow pressure regulating filter that’s found on the fuel filter housing that connects the housing to the return line. I pulled the valve and sure enough it was completely seized, requiring some effort with a screwdriver to get the valve to move out all. I believe this is the final thing to get the car running properly before touching the MFI at all. The new valve should come later this week so i’ll update then, but for now here’s a list of what i’ve been up to with the car and some photos! She’s looking good stored next to my targa in my studio.

So far I have
- Replaced inop oil pressure sensor and oil level sender. Oil change with new filter and 20w50 VR1.
- Rebuilt/greased the 901 shifter tower, all new shift bushings and wevo rear coupler
- Rebuilt/painted the pedal cluster, added bronze bushings, and replaced the worn out gas pedal with a new one. Replaced all 3 accelerator linkage bushings in the tunnel.
- Replaced the deteriorated hand throttle arm and replaced the bell crank bushings with bronze. Spent a bit of time playing with the linkages to remove all play and have the pedal end at WOT on the throttle bodies and the floor pedal stop.
- Picked up some Cobra RS seats and I welded my own brackets for the sliders. Adding eyelets for the new retractable belts this week.
- Replaced sugar scoops with H4s and vintage Bosch beetle glass

6 months ago i bought myself a welder from harbor freight and taught myself how to mig weld with the help of a couple youtube tutorials. One of the best tools i’ve bought. Been getting a ton of use out of finally learning how to weld.

Look forward to following what you do to this car. I think you’ll enjoy learning about the MFI injection. I’ll be interested to see if you plan to restore stock or will be tempted to modify for more performance. Any preliminary plans for this one?

I went down that rabbit hole and modified almost every part of my SC and left almost not a single part stock when I built the engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension.. I think i’m going to keep this one a little closer to stock except for suspension. I already have some plans for that.

As far as the engine, I plan to keep it stock as it is perfectly healthy with 155# of compression and 2-3% leak down across the board with obvious signs of being rebuilt (574 visible at case halves, media blasted heads, etc). I will probably pull the 901 in the next couple months and rebuild after I finish the om606 swap on my g wagen I’m starting next week. Only one car can get torm apart at a time.

The video below was a huge help in learning the basics. I picked up a ton of scrap metal and just started practicing over and over again. Only way to learn is to get in there and start practicing.

Finally got retractable seat belts in the car. Had my buddy cut me out some brackets with perfect 7/16 holes to mount the belts. Chased the threads for all 16 mounting holes and threw in new bolts and washers. Being a 20 minute drive from McMasters is a blessing and a curse. Pulling seats out one last time to have the finished brackets powder coated black. Patiently waiting for the overflow valve to come in the mail and ready for its first proper rip around LA.

Replaced the overflow valve and finally got it running right. The original MFI is really something special and i’m stoked it’s running like a dream now. I still have a long list of so many things to fix on the car. Goes to the body shop Monday for a bunch of love on the front end and i’m glad get it out of my studio for a month or so so I can get back to work.
