Replacement Front Trunk (Frunk) Gas Struts

I just replaced my Frunk struts that finally gave up the ghost after 20+ years of faithful service.

The old ones were Meyle PN 440 160 3840 HD 430N.

My replacements were Stabilus PN 9369BL.

Hopefully another 20 years between replacements.

HAHA just replaced mine with HD Uro struts yesterdaY.. I hope they last!!!!

They won't last 20 years are even close to it but at least they're inexpensive in Porsche terms. The HD are they way to go.

I'm changing mine to these. They are a little expensive as compared to gas struts but they are a once and done replacement option. They also make one for the engine lid.

Only thing with those is you can forget that you have them or if someone else is closing your lid and they can force them down and bend the hood. I use those only on an aluminum hood. Steel I don't because to get the gaps correct to the cowl you need to use pressured struts on a steel hood. Pressured struts on an aluminum hood push them up too high in the corners. Plus they don't look stock which I care about the look.

I've had Original Porsche, 2 flavors of Stabilus, Uro. Way back, I bought "Lifetime" heavy duty Weltmeister from Automotion. Of course Weltmeister is long gone. Automotion has a liquidation chain (Automotion -> PerformanceProducts ->Ecklers -> RosePassion). RosePassion, claims they bought the parts inventory but not liabilities (ie. warranty legacy). So that replacement support died.

What's the deal with hood/engine lid lift shocks for Porsche? Why do they all suck so bad?
I also have a 25 year old Toyota 4Runner. The lift gate still has the original lift shocks, working well.

I did this too, replaced both with brand new Stabilus struts. Turns out a few layers of paint is all it takes to overpower the Stabilus struts... it gently closes when lifted. Sometimes if its like 80 degrees it'll stay up. Shouldve just bought a carbon hood prop!

I have to wonder that as well. I have replaced mine many times over my 27 years of ownership. Various different brands. Easy enough to do.

20 years is impressive.

I bought my '75 911 in 2010; it had the lifetime Weltmeister struts on the frunk and engine lid. Neither held a charge. I replace with Stabilus ~2013 when I got the thing on the road. I just had to replace both frunk struts again, so I guess I got 10 years out of that pair.

I put the 959 struts from Porsche on my definitely-not-a-959 Porsche. They work great and they don't push up the hood in the corners. Very little pressure till they're near the top of travel. But very expensive.

The most reliable hood strut I have is the golf club that came with the car.

I’ve replaced the hydraulic struts a couple of times during my 10 year ownership. Just enough time between repairs that I have to relearn the procedure and wrestle with tight quarters! Not that difficult just fussy.

I've replaced my replacements a few times (30 years of ownership). So the latest are those mechanical ones where you lift it up and it stays up, then you lift it a bit higher then you can lower it down. I can't remember what they are called but they work very well.

After 52 years of ownership, I have replaced the gas struts too many times.

Fix? Cut a piece of 3/4 PVC pipe about 14 inches. Install top to hood attachment nut and the bottom to the shock absorber nut. Cost 20 cents.
