Painting Targa Hard Top

Hello:

I have an original hard top for my Targa that could benefit from a re-coating or painting.

It’s the original black with the flecks in it (very much like undercoating).

I’d like to paint it with the same black paint. Has anyone done this?

I’ve seen Wurth High Build Rubberized Underseal paint. Would that work?

Any thoughts would be very helpful.

Thank you.

Seems like it is almost a plastic coat on the rails. I've never painted mine except with touch up testers black paint where the metal shows. My rail covering is original and is smooth except where chipped, so undercoating would not work for mine.
Can provide a picture of mine if you wish.

When I sent top to to Dan to be rebuilt I might should have sent some of the new anodized rails with the top.

Sorry but I do not know if any paint is the right match.

Oops, I thought you were referring to the rails, I see now you have a targa hard top.

Any quality automotive paint is typical for fiberglass. That’s what a body shop done for a pickup trunks cap, maintained the same texture.

I don’t think you want to sand the surface smooth but you do want to keep the oem texture intact. Sanding will make the texture uneven but if that were the case, then a crinkle type paint and primer has to be applied trying to match the oem look. Results will vary.

Prepping the surface being the most important step and then match the satin black color.
If I were to do this I would simply prime and re-paint, no sanding - of course washing, scrub thoroughly and scuff with a scotch pad, single coat of primer and three finish coats thereafter.
Can’t skimp on the paint and a decent spray gun.

Get yourself a bottle of black upol Raptor bedliner. You can easily match the factory finish and the stuff will last forever. This is a golf cart I sprayed with one coat almost 10 years ago, stays outside in the elements year round. You can tint it any color using a urethane tint, it’s 2 part very durable.
