Converting to LED on your original Porsche Key
I discovered that the anemic lights in our keys can be converted to LED if wished. I just did my 2 keys in 10 minutes and the light is significantly brighter
Supplies per Key (RadioShack/The Source is just one source, not in Canada so I sourced elsewhere) RadioShack 389/390 1.55V Silver-Oxide Button Cell Battery (2 per key) Vendor: RadioShack Catalog №: 2302247 RadioShack 5mm High-Visibility LED - White (1 per key) Vendor: RadioShack Catalog №: 2760320 First: Open your key and remove the battery, copper divider, foam cushion, and old light. Second: Insert the LED light into the hole. The short post goes to the battery, and the long post gets wrapped securely around the copper pole. Keep the original spring! I suggest that if you have equal length posts from the LED test on the 2 batteries first to get the correct orientation of the posts http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1681248585.jpg Third: Place the two batteries on the spring. Positive side up. The short LED pole should be placed ON TOP of the batteries. I had it to the side in the picture because it wouldn't stay without the cap on. When you assemble it, the pole has to be ON TOP of the batteries. If its to the side, it wont work consistently. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1681248691.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1681248756.jpg Fourth: Balance the cap on top of the batteries and pole. The pole should be sandwiched between the cap and batteries. Just get it to stay, it wont be secured until you close the whole key. Its a little tricky, as the batteries teeter a bit on the spring. Just try to keep it all together. Once its closed up, it will stay. (just make sure that pole IS on top of the batteries when you close it up. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1681249007.jpg Lastly: Carefully close up the key. You should have a very nice button feel. Firm, yet good movement. I think mine actually feels much better (secure) than the original setup. Anyways...if its a rainy day and you want to tackle a 911 Project..here you go Bob |
RadioShack? How old is this new post? RS has been dead long time now...

|
917...Radioshack or aka the Source seems to still exist
anyways...it was just an fyi for interested people..guess your not :-) |
I did this years ago. Works great. RS was still down the street at the time

Confirmed Radio shack (internet) lists both parts on US site

Well I'll be a somanabish. I loved RS. It was the only electronics store that was open where you could put hands on product (before Frye's showed up) beyond the nominal 9-5 that everyone else was open, and thus not available due to school or work.
I have the key light hack from someone else bookmarked (https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/791875-lighted-key-head-conversion-led.html), just waiting for the time to get to it. It's nice to have another one. Cheers |
Brilliant, just ordered the parts needed, thanks for sharing.
