'78 SC Fuel Filter Woes...

Coming out of the garage, absolutely fuming... A month wasted, 3 orders, and now returns later... I've still not been able to get a Fuel Filter for my '78 Targa that is correct...

The outgoing
...which is NLA.

I've not successfully found one here, I've ordered the "replacement" Bosch from FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, and then had a friend (shop owner) order what he was told was the proper replacement, delivered to his shop. All incorrect... Closest thus far was a Bosch 0-450-905-021 ....yet the outlet fitting size is incorrect.

I believe I've found the most like (visually) replacement on SunCoast 0-450-905-079 so this will be the 4th attempt....

If anyone has any information or experienced the same and has insight into what the proper resolution was, that would be greatly appreciated.

When I faced the same issue, I found that Pelican sold the two adapters I needed:

Fuel Filter Fitting (14 X 14 mm) Part #: 930-110-198-00-OEM
Fuel Filter Fitting (12 X 16 mm) Part #: 930-110-199-00-OEM

These are the inlet and outlet couplers needed to use the 021 fuel filter.

On my next fuel filter change, I will switch to the filter from the Carreras. It's used across many more models and is more easily available, including at local FLAPS.

FWIW, all that is different are the fitting on the filter. Just reuse the old ones.

See if you have an old filter in your stash. I have a pile of them to allow me to adapt what I get to what I have.

I have made a habit of saving the fittings as they do not go bad and are handy for things like this. At most, all I need a new is a crush washer.

Unfortunately that doesn't work for those of us without a stash. And the statement that you can use the fittings from the old one is wrong - you need both of the ones I posted earlier to fit the 021 filter which replaces the 016.

Understood. I was just saying that if you have some older parts laying around, they may be able to rescue you. I have had to deal with this issue for years since the 1973.5 fuel filter became NLA. I always need to McGyver something for the one I am able to get.

Thank you for the information on the fittings guys!

I understand that it would work if I had the fittings or the synapse ammunition to be able to determine the required fitting sizes.

Hardware knowledge is the 1 place I really am weak and need to educate myself. So many of you guys on here can look at a nut or bolt and be like, yeah... that's the aurora borealis 2.38mm.

I will eventually get there as I don't want my car to end up a bitsa car years down the road... Bitsa this and bitsa that... ya know.

Fingers crossed the SunCoast Piece will be a direct replacement with the hardware.

Find a local place that serves the hot rod community or a place that makes hydraulic hoses. Bring the new filter you have and the old one. Explain the problem. They mAy have the fitting or can braze one from the parts you have.

In the OP

"I believe I've found the most like (visually) replacement on SunCoast 0-450-905-079 so this will be the 4th attempt...."

Picture on their website is quite stubborn, but looks like the outgoing, just different number

'78 SC Fuel Filter Woes...

Nor for nothing and I believe others have mentioned similar- Belmetetric has all the fittings and adapters you need to make just about anything work.

https://belmetric.com/fittings-plugs/

Tony posted the threads for various fuel filters above, it’s pretty simple to figure out what you need.

I had trouble with my old CIS testing gauge kit not fitting my car and a few $10 adapters solved it.

Get a thread gauge like this as they’re just good to have in the garage, and then buy the adapters.

Nut & Bolt Thread Checker - 26 Male/Female Gauges - 14 Inch & 12 Metric for Quickly Checking Nuts and Bolts Inch or Metric and Verifying The Size https://a.co/d/h5q6Dzy

I encountered this when I replaced my filter last fall - took the new filter, along with the old one and its fitting, to a local hydraulic shop that matched the threads on the new filter and the outlet on the old fitting.
