Alternator Wire Size and Type

I searched the forum regarding the size of the red alternator wire, and determined that the original size in the engine harness was equivalent to 8 gauge, but it was recommended to use 6 gauge. What is the recommended type of wiring (GPT, TXL, SXL,..) to use, since it has to withstand the high heat of a 911 engine bay? I’ve searched the web and can’t find any 6 Gauge SXL, and only 8 gauge GPT. Any recommendations on sources?

The car is a 1970 911T in case it matters for the wiring size.

Also, where is the wire size listed in the Factory Manual? I have the original factory manual with the wiring diagrams and cant find where the metric wire sizes are listed for each circuit.

Thanks!

Just go to an auto parts supplier/store and buy some real red battery cable. It will be rated for what you need.

Look for painless wiring brand alternator 6awg
It is a thin wall xlpe type.

Stay away from PVC insulation, the vinyl insulation is crap. It burns, deforms, absorbs water and oils and it’s cheap.

The XLPE types are better even when thinner than PVC

SXL is the thickest cross link (XL) type
Then GXL.
TXL is the thinnest

GPT is a PVC insulated wire for trailers and other low cost applications.

You will find it at Home Depot. That is where I got mine.

You can get M22759/16 in a lot of sizes pretty easily. It's ETFE (Tefzel), good to 150*C. If your engine bay exceeds that, you've got bigger problems! Here it is in 6 gauge. It's thin, stiff, and a bit of a problem to work with, though. I have a preference for this battery cable. Lower temp rating at 105*C, but it's nice and bendy. Feels like welding cables instead of the Tefzel's power lines, if that makes sense.

(Most of the wire I've got in my garage comes from ProwireUSA - They've got all kinds of fun stuff. If you're ever interested in building a custom harness, this is a great site to bookmark.)

Thanks Guys.

I changed my search based on the info above found the recommended 6 AWG cable.

Does the early Factory Manual provide the wire gauge information, as I can't find it?

Haynes manual diagrams for the 1974 show 10mm going to the back of the starter /battery connection and 2.5 going to engine compartment fuse

10 mm^2 = 8 AWG

Bentley SC manual shows the samehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8565923399.jpg
