911 SC Targa door closing issues
 

Hi. I've had my 83 targa for several years and I noticed the passenger door wasn't closing well. Inspection showed that the strike plate on the B pillar was badly worn so I replaced both and refitted new shims. Several weeks later the driver's door has developed issues where the door latch bounces off the strike plate. If I lift gently on the handle and close slowly it seems to work. Door gaps look good. The issue isn't always present, but is getting more frequent. I can add/subtract shims or adjust shim plate?

Yes, you can adjust the plate with shims and position, but I'd want to see why the problem has occurred now. First, the striker plates have some plastic parts sandwiched in them. Are those intact or cracked? At this point, many of them have cracked. Sponsor sells the replacement plastic bits.

Second, are the door hinges sagging from wear? Few people think to lubricate the door hinges regularly, and it needs to be done to prevent the hinges from wearing and causing the door to sag. I use motorcycle chain lube because it goes on as a liquid which seeps into the hinges, then becomes a thick grease or wax, and has moly or teflon in it.

Third, since it's a Targa, is the car sagging in the middle? check carefully for signs of rust and deformation.

To take some of the guess work out.. order new and replace the hinge pins at the front of door. Then check fitment/closing with your shim adjustments. You may need to make some adjustments at the hinge area.. go slow and watch your gaps.

As stated.. make sure the car isn't sagging, you should check for rust in the lower jamb area, rocker by removing the outer rocker cover, and jackpoint areas.

I think it's sort of normal for targas imho. They're just sort of flexy chassis. Mine has no rust and I have to do this, especially if it's parked on an uneven surface.

Wouldn’t hurt to replace hinge bushings as well.

Thanks all. The plastic in the strike plates is new. I adjusted the strike plate and it seems OK, but I will address the front pins too.
